I want to enable desktop effects in a VMware environment, but Failed,Who can help me?

Asked by ayongying

My steps as below:

1. Open a terminal window.

2. Execute the following command:
sudo aptitude install compizconfig-settings-manager

3.To open the Settings Manager, click System, mouseover Preferences and select Appearance / Visual Effects/Extra:

result: get "desktop effects could not be enabled "

type 'compiz' from the terminal and post the output.
test@ubuntu:~$ sudo compiz
Checking for Xgl: not present.
xset q doesn't reveal the location of the log file. Using fallback /var/log/Xorg.0.log
No whitelisted driver found
aborting and using fallback: xterm
no xterm found, exiting

Notes:
(1)I use Ubuntu 9.10desktop
(2)glxinfo | grep "direct rendering"
$glxinfo |grep rendering
direct rendering: Yes

so,Who can tell me How can I fix this problem

Can you give the output of:
sudo lshw -C display
This will tell use your video card make and model which we need to know, as well as the driver it is currently using.

at no point is:
sudo compiz
used to get desktop effects going.

Thanks

Yes.I install ubuntu in vmware workstation to using it. Like the display card can be installed successfully and I can install fusion-icon in it ,the screensaver both works fine now. but I don't know why enable desktop effects still fail.

according to this ot won't work:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=774038
http://forums.opensuse.org/install-boot-login/393365-opensuse-vmware-compiz-fusion-yes-however.html

The hardware is virtualised so you will not get full 3D accel but its getting better, you simply need 3D accel in VMware so a VMware forum would be a better choice. HAL has correctly identified the virtualised hardware and is using the right driver for it, the VMware settings (or limiation of VMware itself) are stopping compiz running

Not an ubuntu question really.

you are right,I think this is VMware issue ,not an Ubuntu question.Maybe virtualised hardware from Vmtools doesn't support this compiz running now.
And Thank you very much for give me those info and link,It is very useful for me ,I will go through those web web today and investigate this issue.
Thanks again for your kindly help.
