Way to Delete Ubuntu "demo" files

Asked by Tory

is there a way to delete the demo files in Ubuntu, such as the sample music, videos, texts etc....

As "owner" of the computer I would like to be able to delete items that are not relevant to me, and all of these files seem protected.

Eventually Ubuntu let us delete Evolution (before it was a mandatory program even if we didnt want it or use it).
Now we need the same progress with the ad/demo files.

Much appreciated, Ubuntu Rules!

Aloha,

type (but do not press enter):

sudo apt-get --purge remove ubuntu-

then press tab a few times, you will see (for example)

ubuntu-sounds

which can be removed, there are other packages like ubuntu-artwork which can also be removed harmlessly (just watch the deps it threatens to also remove if any)

Thanks that may work, but is a bit too risky for me.

I would like to be able to delete the individual files (word, spreadsheet, etc) that come with Ubuntu for demo purposes. This would be "safe" and not risk botching a great working OS.

"sudo apt-get --purge remove example-content"

In what way is it risky?

I guess because I am a newbie, removing packages - ubuntu with dependencies?

The purge remove example-content sounds more specific but am not sure why I just cant :right click delete the unwanted images, documents etc included with the ubuntu intall that are just demo files?

They are not sacred or part of the OS so why does Ubuntu even "protect them" and make them tricky (at least for the newbie) to remove? They did the same thing with a previous install re Evolution, it was a non-removable program, just like IE for Microslop.

Appreciate the good help above but I dont even know if I use a real "--" in the example above, and if "example-content" is the name of the item I want removed or if it has to include the extension such as jpg or pdf?

SO BACK TO THE MAIN POINT: UBUNTU please dont protect demo files, let the user delete if they wish, make it the same way we delete anything else.

(special thanks to the community for their ideas and expertise)

it doesn't. they are part of a package which can easily be removed. Ubuntu doesn't protect them in any way, you just have to remove the relevant package and it will be removed.

The files I am looking at for example: under USR SHARE example-content there are several files and folders.

Shouldnt i be able to individually delete "About_Ubuntu_Russian", Aesops Fables oog, etc.....

From what I am understanding ALL OF THIS is some type of package.... and I can delete it all or be stuck with it all, since they cant be individually deleted since they are protected by the OWNERS PERMISSIONS ??

Its very hard for me to accept they arnt protected in anyway, because I cant delete them...

This might be a work-around, go to the terminal and type sudo nautilus
that will open up the root browser, then browse to the location where
the stuff is located, and delete the individual files. BUT PLEASE BE
CAREFUL, YOU CAN DELETE SOME IMPORTANT STUFF IF YOU ARE BEING CARELESS
ABOUT IT :)

only want to use it. That is a tribute to how good Linux is.

Vikram, you do NOT run nautilus with sudo

It is ran with gksudo

Tory, you can delete individual files but when it comes to removing the packages youo WILL get errors. The OS you are using is package based to allow easy adding/removing of files and apps, removing individual files is possible but is not really advised

at the end of the day, its your system and all we can do is advose

First, many many thanks to the wonderful Ubuntu community! I love the os - its clean, fast, and as the apple users like to say "it just works". From the many comments I was able to figure out:

- I can delete the entire examples package in one shot, using the synaptics package manager. this removed all the demo files
- the other way using the terminal? may also have worked but made me nervous that I might do the wrong thing
- finally just for the Ubuntu programmers, it would be nice to be able to delete any demo documents (spreadsheet, etc) that came with Ubuntu rather than delete the entire package. That is how we normally deal with documents etc.

As an aside, just received the Windows 7 upgrade disk for my newer laptop. I can say it is less pretty than the Vista, slightly faster than vista, and looks to be a poor copy of linux/ubuntu which still seems a lot faster, better designed (clearer icons and layout).
Microslop just seems to be playing catchup with Linux and Apple. One day they might even make a decent browser.

Many thanks to ALL,

Tory
