i am new to ubuntu 9.10, trying to use the free cd

Asked by DPoirier

I do not know my way around and everything i do seems to be limited to internet. Cannot install Flash driver, cannot have my 2 monitors working, my mouse is not working properly, even my French Canadian keyboard is odd.
I thought it would be simple and easy but every time i try i find i run into the same walls, like a baby.
I am an experienced Windows user but am tired of the Microsoft changes of faulty environments.
I do not even know how i am going to get back to this long question . . . but i will try again some other time.
I had ask a similar question a week ago in launchpad but there seems to be days that go by before anyone replies!
I do not know how to install drivers, software, nor anything else for that matter.
Is it because i am using the free cd?
Thank you fro trying to help as much as you can.
I have another regular email but do not know how to install it here in this dual boot environment.

Are you talking about flash in firefox? as far as the dual monitors try this link http://www.yolinux.com/TUTORIALS/LinuxAndDualMonitors.html
What seems to be the problem with your mouse?
Maybe you could give us some more information then maybe someone will be able to give you a better answer.
I use Thunder Bird for my email client and it is easily configured a simple step by step set up is all that is needed.

"I do not know how to install drivers, software, nor anything else for that matter."

Applications>software center>ubuntu-resticted-extras will install flash and other things you will need. For drivers you can look under system>admin>hardware drivers.I think http://amitech.50webs.com/installing/index.php.html will be helpful.

have you read about the wine program, most all the driver for your hardware are for windows the wine program might help with most of your drivers. open this link it http://linux.softpedia.com/get/System/Emulators/Wine-148.shtml
need to use the synaptic package manager to install wine and then use wine to try to install your windows drivers it worked for me on my nvidia and my wireless cards

Thanks everyone for the replies. I spent another 2 hours this morning reqading and trying different things, still no luck.
David, your suggestion about 2 monitors is too advanced for me . . . yet! When that page gets displayed on my Firefox browser i get the error message: "additional plugins are required to display all the media on this page". Then i click on install missing plugins and get the plugin finder window. When i click install i get: "Could not find package flashplugin installer" but the next window that pops up says "Firefox finished installing the plugin"??? Running around in circle here and getting nowhere.
As you can see I am still trying hard but there is something i am not catching yet.
Also I would like to include screen captures in this reply to launchpad, is that possible?
Thanks Zvacet, very good instructions and easy reading but i got stuck at Step 3: "Search, mark and apply :First you search for the package you want to install." That is very good but i do not even know what i want to install and when i perform a search the terms i am looking for are not there, for example Adobe flash reader?
Thank Steve I will try Wine after i get a hold on Synaptic installer.
Can someone delete my previous input on Launchpad, i did not realize i was responding to all?

"Apparently gnasn flash is installed but does not work?"

Go to the synaptic and uninstall it.Install flashplugin-nonfree and if thast doesn't work search for adobe-flashplugin in synaptic. All packages you can find if you type their names in search box.

Thank again zvacet but even though i type exactly what you wrote in your reply nothing is found in the Synaptic Package Manager. Is it because I am booting from the CD and the installation is not working correctly?
I think the problem is that I need to have the exact name in order to search because i do not know what i am searching for not what is it that i am supposed to installed to make this work. For example, i was trying to play a video in Firefox and got the following error message: Yahoo requires Macromedia Flash Player version 10: Action necessary Macromedia Flash Player needs to be upgraded / installed on your computer. Click the link below for a free download of the latest Macromedia Flash Player.
Now my question is where can I find this in Synaptic? I typed flash plugin and there are 119 packages, which one do i select?
Over 30 of those have the green box so i guess they are already installed? the worse about this is that i feel i am not progressing at all and the answers i get do not permit me to solve the problems.
Any way I will continue to try different things tonight and hope that a lightning will strike my brain cells to make it jump to recognize all Ubuntu things!
Merci et bonne soiree.

I installed Ubuntu 9.10 fromm the free cd hoping to solve all my problems . . . wrong!
Now I cannot even use my computer anymore i have a Grub loading error : no such disk, grub rescue >
Please help, I was ready to give Ubuntu a chance but right now I am really desperate and after reading all those related bugs and answers I still do not know what to do. It has been a long first day for my Ubuntu first try and I am tempted to drop it . . .
This is so upsetting and difficult to fix when we are totally new to the software, language, jargon.
Thank you

Alright now, I will tell something important here, the suggestions
mentioned above are great, but what's happening is that in 9.10 you
will get some GRUB problems, so can try installing it over again and
see if that might help, by the way how are you installing Ubuntu, is
it guided partitioning where you use up the whole disk. This might
help [1], also we are having a release soon in april which is going to
definitely solve these problems.

There are lots of Linux users who don't care how the kernel works, but
only want to use it. That is a tribute to how good Linux is.

I pressed the enter key too fast so I am just adding a comment to the solution. I am not sure how I came to solve the problem but
I was hoping that re-installing on top of the existing initial installation could possibly helped. Well it did and I have been running since and I have lots more to ask but that will be the subject of another message.
Thanks everyone.
