Installing Ubuntu from cd and it freezes just after starting

Asked by Dan Morris

I am attempting to fix errors with a home computer. The pc failed to get past the start up screens, and continuously restarted itself. I got told to try Ubuntu and that it may help fix my computer up. I am only reasonable when it comes to computer knowledge so i just tried it out.
Basically i downloaded Ubuntu 9.10 on a different computer and put it onto a cd. I put that cd in my non-working pc. the program itself comes up with all the options. so it is installed onto the cd correctly. When i check disk drives and test memory it executes fine and performs the task. However when i select 'install' or 'try ubuntu....' it loads the symbol for ubuntu for about 60 seconds, then the screen changes and freezes. It ends up being a black background with white stripes horizontally from top to bottom, and also there are green dots throughout the screen.

I just want to get it working, so if anyone can help me out it would be appreciated.

Did you MD5 test the ISO you downloaded?
DId you burn as slowly as you could?
Did you run the CD verifier?

You have burned an unverified image. How do you know the download was complete and error free? answer: you don't.

MD5 tests guard against bad downloads by allowing you to calculate a checksum based on the file and comparing it to what is expected. If they differ then the file you have is bad and needs redownloading.

The CD can also check itself as burners and CDs use moving parts which are prone to errors from jitter, faulty CD writers and poor quality media. This was on the first page of the CD when you first booted to it but (like most new users) failed to test the CD and went right on with the install.

I strongly advise you reboot to the CD and run the CD self test, if it fails you will need to redownload, MD5 test, burn and reinstall the OS.

Here are the hashes:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuHashes

Here are is the method (also includes methods for checking on Mac and Windows)
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM

Once you have established the disk was good when you used it we can progress as a bad disk will make a bad installation. Please tell 2 friends about MD checking, and tell them to tell 2 friends

More than likely the ISO file had some issues that's why you are
having freezes during the install, I have done a lot of installations
and never had that happen before to me :D

Vikram
