how to install Ubuntu 9.10 on sandisk usb

Asked by jahmbahwahnn

I INSTALLED UBUNTU TO MY 8 GB SCANDISK PENDRIVE WHICH WORKS LIKE A LIVE SESSION USER. IT WORKS FINE AND I HAVE INSTALLED ADDITIONAL UTILITY SOFTWARES. MY SESSION IS ALSO GETTING SAVED AS I HAVE ALLOTTED 1 GB FOR DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS SAVING.
IS THERE A PROVISION TO INSTALL UBUNTU 9.10 ON THE USB PEN DRIVE JUST LIKE INSTALLING ON THE LAPTOP HD.
CAN ANY ONE BLESS ME WITH SOLUTION PLEASE.
THANKS IN ADVANCE.

The LiveCD has a USB disk creator utility built in

Boot to live CD, have your USB stick inserted and use that. Job done

THANKS FOR THE REPLY. APOLOGETICALLY, OF COURSE, EVENTHOUGH I FAILED TO MENTION THAT I INSTALLED USING THE USB STARTUP DISK CREATOR, I WANTED TO KNOW THAT IS IT THE ONLY PROCEDURE TO FULLY INSTALL UBUNTU IN USB PEN DRIVE OR DOES ANY OTHER OPTION EXIST?. THE DETAILS SHOW THAT IT IS A LIVE SESSION USER. AND IT BEHAVES LIKE A LIVE CD,(i.e. PROMPTING ME DURING STARTUP WHETHER TO INSTALL IN HARD DRIVE OR RUN UBUNTU WITHOUT ANY CHANGES IN THE LAPTOP). DOES IT NOT STARTUP JUST LIKE ANY OTHER OPERATING SYSTEM WITHOUT PROMPTING ME TO SELECT WHETHER TO INSTALL OR USE UBUNTU WITHOUT ANY CHANGE IN THE LAPTOP WHILE STARTUP? (WHETHER LINUX RELEASES, OR XP OR VISTA)
I AM POSTING THIS AFTER BOOTING FROM THE USB (UBUNTU). MY SESSIONS ARE SAVED AND I HAVE 8 GB OF DISK SPACE AND I HOPE THAT THIS IS SUFFICIENT ENOUGH DISK SPACE FOR UBUNTU INSTALL.
THANK YOU ONCE AGAIN.

Hi,

8 GB space is enough to install Ubuntu (minimum required is 4 GB).

You can install Ubuntu to an USB drive/key like to any internal hard drive by using the live CD.

If you use a desktop, a sure solution is to disconnect the internal hard drive before booting the computer with a live CD.
If you use a laptop and cannot easily do so, then you should be sure to install the GRUB on the USB drive/key and not (by default) on the internal drive. This choice can be made only if you click on the advanced options at the last screen of the installation (the summary of installation), then a popup window will appear where you can select your USB device.

To know you usb device, from the live CD, open a terminal and type

sudo fdisk -l

Installing on an USB key, you may wish to use ext2 (file system without journaling), instead of ext3/ext4 (with journaling), to decrease the writing cycles to the USB.

THANKS Vu Do Quynh, THANKS FOR THE KIND EFFORT. WILL ATTEMPT IN DESKTOP AS I AM NOT A TECHIE TO DO IT(AS YOU HAVE MENTIONED THE COMPLICATIONS OF INSTALLING WITH A LAPTOP) I WOULD RATHER FOLLOW YOUR FIRST SUGGESTION REMOVE THE HDD AND BOOT FROM LIVE CD AND THEN INSTALL IT ON THE USB DRIVE.
THANK YOU ONCE AGAIN.

Can you help with this problem?
