Muchas gracias por su atencion.
Instale obuntu con la opcion " dentro de Windows " . Tengo un disco " master
" con los programas y otro esclavo que utilizo para guardar los datos.
Cuando instale Obuntu lo hice en el disco esclavo por tener mayor capacidad
de guardar ( 40 Gb ). Al abrir Sistema-Preferencia-Resolucion de pantalla,
unicamente aparecen un menu con dos escogencias: 800X 600 y otra mas baja.
Que debo hacer para acceder al menu con mas resoluciones.

Disculpe tanta molestia, soy un aficionado en esto y apenas estoy empezando
a usar el obuntu y quiero aprender todo lo que pueda.

De nuevo gracias por su atencion y ayuda.

Vete a sistema -> administración -> controladores de hardware. ¿Puedes instalar algún controlador relativo a la tarjeta gráfica?

Abre una consola yendo a Aplicaciones -> Accesorios -> Terminal y escribe el siguiente comando:

lshw -c display

Copia y péganos la salida que te proporciona.

¿Has ido al otro sitio que te he dicho?
¿Qué versión de Ubuntu tienes instalada?

No entiendo a que otro sitio s refieres.....?

Esta es mi PC:

Athlon ( tm ) 64 Procesador 3000+ memoria 756.9 MB / tarjeta video Geforce
6600 GT, 1 disco de 40 GB para el sistema de Windows y demas programas y
otro de 80 GB donde almaceno los datos. ( disco esclavo )

Obuntu version 8.04 hardy nucleo Linux 2.6.24-23 Generic Gnome 2.22.3.

Realice la instalacion de esta version de ubuntu en una pc virtual y no he
tenido problemas con la resolucion de la pantalla dado que el menu es grande
y hay donde escoger.

TIENE QUE VER QUE ESTA OTRA INSTALACION LA HAYA HECHO DENTRO DE WINDOWS Y
ALMACENADA EN UN DISCO ESCLAVO..?

No, creo que no tiene nada que ver con eso. Con el otro sitio me refería a:
sistema -> administración -> controladores de hardware

Al ingresar a la direccion sistema/ adm / controladores de hardware me
presenta una pantalla con el mensaje " no se estan usando controladores
privativos en este sistema " y abajo dice " controlador para
tarjetasgraficas / estado deshabilitado. Si lo habilito y reinicio el
sistema, me muestra otra pantalla en la cual me indica que la resolucion con
la que se esta procesando es muy baja ( 800 X 600 ) y me solicita que la
configure yo mismo. El inconveniente es que no puedo hacer que el sistema
reconozca la tarjeta de video que menciono

Si entonces habilitándolo no hay forma, instala el driver usando envy-ng. Puedes encontrar instrucciones en: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/NvidiaManual#Installation with Envy/EnvyNG

Básicamente instala el paquete envy-ng desde Synaptic y luego en Aplicaciones -> Herramientas del sistema -> EnvyNG accedes a la herramienta.

has probado con xrandr???
