.tar.gz files are same like .zip files. You can open them with Archive Manger or file roller. You can also right click these files and select Extract here from the menu.

Hi, Peter.
I can relate, but had never seen all the basic information together as compactly as this Ubuntu page.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/CompilingEasyHowTo

Does that solve your problem?

I managed to get the tarball into my local user scr directory.... but nothing else seemed to work following the instructions from this link.. ie (./configure) etc, so I am still lost. Seems like it is too hard for a novice to do... I might just settle to getting self - installing programs from now on... or go back to windows. Thanks for you help anyway.

Hi again Peter. can you tell us which game/version it is, and which version of Ubuntu you are using?
Seems your problem has changed from tarballs to a specific game ayway, so if you mark the tarball problem solved, and ask a new question relating to a specific game, experienced gamers will probably spot and quickly solve a problem otherwise hidden to them.
