Howdy Mike-d. here,
(Disclaimer) I usually just file bug reports and try to answer a question or two every once in a while.
If you have options of where to plug in your speaker or headphone try plugging into them before changing too many settings, maybe before even changing settings. logging in and out of ubuntu has sound unless you disable it. If you do plug into a different place for sound than windows, make sure you computer can power the speakers, or there are self-powered or plug into a power device also, you can probably test with headphones if you have any.
I have tried to help other with there sound here's some of my suggestions, which some parts my help you also.
