Sound jack configuration

Asked by Greg Evans

I'm having trouble configuring my sound jack for headphones playback. The sound plays fine through the main speakers (it has a separate jack at the back) but doesn't switch to headphones when I plug in. When I do the same under Windows XP it runs a screen that asks what I just plugged in, so I'm assuming this is a software config issue. Does anyone have a suggestion? I'm a complete newbie at Linux...

System:
Acer Power 2000
Core 2 Duo 4400 (2 GHz)
Intel 946GZ chipset
1 GB DDR2 memory

Thanks

Howdy Mike-d. here,
(Disclaimer) I usually just file bug reports and try to answer a question or two every once in a while.
Have you tried right clicking on Speaker Icon on TaskBar in the Upper Top Right corner ? Choosing Open Volume Control and changing devices and adjusting preferences, and Left clicking speaker icon and choosing Preferences and adjusting accordingly ? Also System->Preferences->Sound: and adjust Sound Preferences ?
Good Luck, If you need more Info, ask for more Info.

Hi Greg,

I had the same problem. I don't think Ubuntu will automatically recognize when you plug in a headset, though I may be wrong. What I did was:

Click on the sound icon in the top right of your screen (probably up there somewhere), then click the "Volume Control" button that appears.

Click on the switches tab, and make sure the headset switch is on.

The sound should now come out of the headset and speakers. If you want to turn the speakers off, open the volume control and mute the "front" speakers (or whatever it is called on your machine).

Leaving the headset switch on all the time does not seem to be a problem. You just have to use the "volume control" dialogue box to mute or unmute the main speakers as needed.

This works with the HDA Intel Alsa mixer. You can select different mixer devices from the top menu through [System] [Preferences] [Sound]
