No WPA PSK option in Network Manager

Asked by Wim Vanweersch

Hello,

In the Network Manager of UBUNTU 7.04 there is no option for WPA PSK encrypted passw, although there should be one according the documentation!
I can choose bewteen 2 WEP encrypted psswd, but no WPA PSK.
It seems like a bug in Network Manager.

Greets,

Wim.

How are you getting there? Are you connecting to a network from the applet dropdown list or are you choosing the option to connect to a specific network?

Hello Joel,

Thanks for your reaction!

I want to connect to a specific wireless network.
It is a network that's up and running; it already works properly wireless with a another PC on Win XP.

I use Belkin: router and wireless cards.
When I want to connect to the existing network I expect the Network Manager from UBUNTU gives me also the option from a drop down menu, to choose for WPA PSK for the encryption key. But I also can choose between 2 WEP-encryptions.

Greets,

Wim.

How old is this laptop? Has this laptop ever been able to connect with another OS? Can this laptop connect to other WPA networks? Unfortunately, the fact that another laptop can connect isn't much help unless it's identical to the one you're having trouble with. The Belkin card you're using in the laptop, what's the model number? Does it appear on this page: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HardwareSupportComponentsWirelessNetworkCardsBelkin

Also, are you connecting to a network by choosing a network name from the applet dropdown list, or are you choosing the option titled "Connect to Other Wireless Network"?

Also, please post the output of 'lspci | grep Ethernet' so we can see what card you're using.

Hi,

My laptop is about 5 years old. He can connect with another OS, for example with a shared directory from Win XP. My laptop can connect to the network under Win XP.

The list:
My PCMCIA card is listed: F5D7010, with BCM4306. So 3x 'No' (unfortunately).

I tried ndiswrapper, but no result.

Command 'lspci | grep Ethernet' gives following:

'00:09.0 Ethernet controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] SiS900 PCI Fast Ethernet (rev 02)'.

Greets,

Wim.

Try the directions here to load the bcm43xx driver: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/Driver/bcm43xx/Feisty

If that doesn't work, and you have the Windows install disc for the wireless card, try the directions here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/Driver/Ndiswrapper

Please be patient, as this could require a few reboots. If neither set of directions work for you, I would recommend getting one of the cards on the hardware page (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/WirelessCardsByVersion) that have "Yes" under the Ubuntu version you're using.

Today is my first day with Ubuntu. I am using a DELL Inspiron 1501. I have Vista in this Laptop. Double boot. My Router is a Belkin Wireless G Router. I can connect with WPA-PSK encryption AES with Vista & XP. My Ubuntu is Feisty 7.04 I downloaded all the updates. I installed the Network Manager and wpasupplicant. I tried my best to configure it following the instructions on the web page (copying and pasting on the Terminal Window) still it shows only Wep. I have several other computers connected using this WPA and I do not want to change the encryption. If I can make my computer connect to the internet and print I will use Ubuntu all the time. I am sick and tired of Windows with all its problems and control from Microsoft. Please, help me.

No wpa_supplicant configuration should be necessary. You also shouldn't have needed to install NetworkManager or wpa_supplicant, they are both in the default install of Feisty. I would recommend upgrading to Hardy though, it's got a lot of improvements.

Could you please paste the output of these Terminal commands?

lspci | egrep 'Network|Ethernet|Wireless'
lsmod | egrep 'ath|hal|b43|ndis'

Also, please tell us what happens when you click the NetworkManager icon and choose your wireless network.

Dear JoelGoguen:

Thank you so much for taking your valuable time to help me. I downloaded
all the updates (including two new versions of Ubuntu) and the wireless
and video card drivers (even though they were proprietary) at this
present moment I am e-mailing you using my wireless connection with WPA
Personal. I am very happy! After I downloaded the latest version of
Ubuntu I shut down my computer and disconnected the cable ready for a
long fight to get it connected. When I got to the Desktop and clicked on
the Network Manager the wireless network was already showing there and I
just had to input the password and was on line in no time.

Before it was just showing eth0 (wired) I think probably because the
driver for the wireless was not installed. This was my first day with
Ubuntu and I was all disoriented. Another reason to appreciate your
help. Now my next fight is to make the printer work. Lexmark Z1300 I
hear there is no support for it and I should buy a HP or Compaq. Well I
have not so many resources and my goal is to sell this one and get the
HP. I am planning to have Ubuntu as the main operating system for all my
computers.

Thank you again for taking the time to help this new guy get his wheels
rolling!

Sincerely,

Enrique.
