ubuntu screen frozen, computer will not work

Asked by thanksLOrd61@yahoo.com

My wife and I have two computers hooked up to one phone line . Every thing was o.k. untill my wife down loaded up dates for her computer. After that, when she turned it back on the computer froze up on the ubuntu screen the bar graft under the word ubuntu will start ,but it stops almost as soon as it gets started and thats where it stays. What can I do to get her computer going again? We have tryed to turn it off and back on again, we tryed to reboot the system but that will not work ether. I really don't know what else to do our computer skills are very limited.

It's most likely checking your harddrive for errors, and not actually
frozen. Try just waiting a bit, usplash will time out and you can see
what's up.

We left it alone for three days and nothing has happened yet, how long should I wait?

Alright so that's most likely not the problem...
Try this so we can at least find out where it hangs, As you start the computer press ESC when GRUB starts to load, on the first item press 'e' then 'e' again on the longer line, remove the word 'splash' and 'quiet' press esc then whatever the button assigned to boot is, I assume 'b', but I forget, this will temporarily modify how the systme boots to give you extremely detailed information, and no graphical splash. Don't worry about the tons of text you won't be able to read. The last few lines when it freezes is what we are interested in.

I have not tried your last suggestion yet but I thought you might be interested in what we discovered. Earlier today I put my Ubuntu 6.06 cd into the computer and nothing happened so I shut it down and left the cd in it. When I came home tonight my wife had the computer up and running but when we took the cd out it went back to what it was doing before. do you still want me to try your last suggestion or has this information changed things?

Having the CD in, it was most likely booting from the LiveCD, that's not
a permanent environment, anything you do will not be preserved.
