Ok, the usual stupid questions:
-maybe Totem has its own volume setting. But I think you checked this already.
-did you check in several videos? Maybe it's just one with an exotic codec for sound. You have an OGG video in the Examples folder of your home.

Then in totem settings, did you check the sound part, and what output you are using ? (could be set on SPDIF, or something like that).

I checked a ogg test page and had no volume there either. As far as in totem im not exactly sure how to ajust audio. So im not sure if the output is correct. The volume bar at the bottom of the video is all the way up. someone also told me to go to "edit> prefrences> audio " but i couldnt find "audio" Guide me ? or any other ideas?

If you don't have the "audio" or "sound" tab in Edit>Preferences, then Totem has a big problem for sure. Sound is working perfectly anywhere else?

Yes sound is working perfectly fine everywhere when i dont need totem. i just had problems installing a flashplayer and i finally figured that out and now this. I am running ubuntu 6.06 a see a lot of advise for the newer 7. version i dont no if that might be a reason other instructions are not helping. But im sure it must be something simple i may be overlooking. My volume settings in alsa mixer all seem ok. the only other info i can offer is that originally totem failed completly audio and video. but in the synaptic package manager i had to change from gstreamer to xine because with gstreamer totem always failed with xine i at least recieved the video without the sound.

Seems that your totem has some serious problems...
What you can try:

-run it from the command line. usually you can see some errors messages that you will never have when running from an icon. This advice is useful for any problem.
-create another user account, log in using it, and check if it's the same. That helps narrowing the problem to a user-based or system-wide one.
-uninstall / reinstall totem

You could try to uninstall Gstreamer plugins and reinstall them (look for gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg, gstreamer0.10-plugins-*)

And you should try also to run totem from the command line. Maybe it will give us useful info.

Can you help with this problem?
