dell xps15 video-driver

Asked by Bastiaan Maters

Hi there,

After I installed Ubuntu 10.04 LUCID on my Dell xps 15 L502x ( 1 GB NVIDIA® GeForce® )
I just can't get the video-card to work! I literally spend 20 hours trying this, trying that, but nothing works.

Things I tried:
Installing Nvidia-current using the terminal/Synaptic Package Manager.
Tried to install the bin-file from the Nvidia website ( that gives me an error about not being able to install the driver while in x - server )
Then I read something about "bumblebee", Installed it, but couldn't get it working either.

I'm new to Linux, but I gained allot of knowledge surfing the web/forums, but I can't find the solution regarding my situation.

Hopefully this is enough information.

I'm looking forward to a solution,

Bastiaan

All you need to do is run:

sudo apt-get install nvidia-current

and it will install what you need.

If you have that dual GPU nonesense then you may need to disable one of the GPUs if possible. Nvidia have stated they will not be supporting optimus on anything but Windows and it plays havok with Linux

I'm not sure, I'd check the BIOS but you will have a tonne of problems with ubuntu and linux generally with the system

Still having an issue with this? i have the exact same computer and i got it to work and work well. it does have to do with the dual GPU's you have to run either just the command prompt and change your video card to be the intel card not the n-vida at first then you can install some third party drivers that will get it to work. Seach for the bumblebee project. sorry if this is too vague i just wanted to respond if you need more info let me know and i will log on to linux and get you the exact info

Can you help with this problem?
