To continue: 11-01-11. 11.10 will now not shut down the computer. For the live CD-- I must hit esc to reach menu, then select acpi=off for the CD to run. Grub must have the same code in it for the system to go to the login screen. System monitor still shows 1 cpu. There are 2 on this computer. ---- I created a live CD of Linux Mint 11. That Cd and system requires the same actions and code for the CD and system to run. Mint 11 has the same problems as 11.10. If You leave these systems behind, then You will drop a lot of people from Ubuntu. The problems of trying to tell anyone about bugs in the system is much more than anyone wants to deal with,--- so there may be thousands with the same problems I have at this point. This will never win the market for Ubuntu. Left as is-- Ubuntu is a dying breed. jg

11-04-11: Things tried from post found about acpi=off This is only way system will boot to Login. tried all other options all end in hang--no boot. also found that acpi is cause of 1 processor and no computer shutdown among other things.
Next tried: sudo hwinfo --framebuffer
Mode 0x0318: 1024x768 (+4096), 24 bits =dec 792 tried using vga=792 in grub will not boot to login
Next tried: in grub this: ro nosplash --verbose text
the last line in display was: [0.360046] [<c1533ebe>] ? kernel_
Then did lookup for nvidia: :~$ lspci -vnn | grep VGA
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: nVidia Corporation NV31 [GeForce FX 5600] [10de:0312] (rev a1) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])
:~$
nvidia 173.14.xx from x-ref using above hex lookup 0312
That is all-- no results-- only acpi=off works.. jg

Hi, thanks for interest. The last trials and post of information
was 11-04-11 on the original question. I still have all of the problems
as listed. Although, it does seem to all be caused by having to use the
item in grub of acpi=off. I also think that may be the reason nvidia
173 is not functional for 3d. Also, xorg is not seeing the terminal
which may be caused by acpi=off. The only diagnostic I had was placed
in the last additional information of 11-04-11. The last line of text
where the system hangs without acpi=off in grub. So, please tell me
*How and What* You need from this system to tie down the problems.
(Is your question solved ?) answer: No, all problems are still the same.

11-10-2011 10.04 lts worked on this desktop. wobbly windows worked
etc. I don't have much use for 3d functions on this computer, BUT,
11.10 with unity or gnome shell 3d is required to run either. After
10.04 the problems have been more and more-- so many that I can't
remember anymore what problem goes with which release. 11.04 did not
require acpi=off but nvidia 173 was activated but not in use. 11.10
nvidia 173 is activated and in use, but must have acpi=off. 10.04thru
11.04 system monitor always showed 2 cpu-- 11.10 now shows only one and
this was not true when I first installed 11.10 using Live CD. acpi=off
had to be used to boot, but 2 cpu were shown until update manager
updates around the 20th of October or so turned off 1 cpu. The ONLY
WAY this system will now boot is using acpi=off. I am forced to run
gnome classic or unity 2d. Also, 11.10 will not shut down the computer.
If You want to cater only to the rich, then You have it made-- no
changes. Why, I can't spend more money for upgrades and would not anyway.
IF 12.04 works like 11.10 and nothing has been fixed of these
problems-- I will DELETE UBUNTU in total and be FORCED to use Windows.
And still, I will not spend over a $100 just for windows 7. I will
stick with win xp pro sp3 until this computer drops dead! You would
be better served by building a better and cleaner product instead of
trying to do something each 6 months, it is getting out of hand.
I am sure I am not the only person that feels this way.
Waiting!

Google search has turned up zero help. No person has offered any help.
Waiting for Update Manager to come up with a fix.......

Thanks for Your input. I looked at the 3 items and saw I would need to
learn how to use them--- as bad as learning a new programming
language. My computer is running gnome classic now and runs unity 2d
also. The use of acpi=off to allow boot and login leaves the system in
a bad state in relation to operation of 9.10, 10.04, 10.10. I'm sorry,
but I can't deal with the complex issues that would be involved to try a
repair for this system only. If update manager comes up with a fix,
then Great, else these problems will remain unfixed.
Please, mark this posting as fixed or cleared or whatever it needs
to be. I will have no more input. Final posting.
Thanks for Your interest.

Sorry, had to add this in ending this item.
9.10, 10.04, 10.10. all worked with 3d etc., and did not require acpi=off. If You really want to fix these problems-- the look at those versions for the correct information to include in 10.10 -- 12.04 etc..
I'm sure there are many people that would help.
That's all.

the look at those versions for the correct information to include in 10.10 -- 12.04 etc..
correct above line--
then look at those versions for the correct information to include in 11.10 -- 12.04 etc..
note-- in 9.10 and 10.04 to activate 3d usage, it acted like the system was loading a module for the 3d based on the video card in use. Why can't the same be used for 11.10 and 12.04? It was clear in 10.04 that nvidia 173 was activated and in use but only required the 3d module to be activated, or installed,-- whatever.

12-10-2011: This is how BAD You have made Your system.
When You made Ubuntu 10.04 ready for use---- The ISO ie. CD worked
with no Problems and the system installed and functioned as it was
made. This COMPUTER installed and RAN the system with minor corrections
and installs. ( IT did NOT require ACPI=OFF in order to function!)..
NOW, today, I downloaded 10.04.3 and burned 2 CD's to make sure the
CD was good. I loaded the CD first under Windows XP sp3 and it
functioned OK showing the Menu to Try or Install etc. Then, Trying for
real, -- The CD NOW requires the same entry and functions as the CD for
Ubuntu 11.10 etc.--- BUT, the CD for 10.04.3 NOW will NOT load in any
manner. Just to try the CD does not work at this time. *SO! now I can't
load or install Ubuntu 10.04.3 on this computer.. *ARE YOU trying to
Kill Ubuntu for everything except the newest equipment or hand held
units ONLY?
My Laptop is old and does not use 3d. It is an Acer Travelmate
223x. It is using Ubuntu 11.10 Gnome Classic and does not require
ACPI=OFF to function. [ To My surprise.... The CD Tray does not
function under 11.10...) It was OK for all the rest..... So,I can't
try these new CD's of 10.04.3 on the Laptop. SO, THERE ARE MORE
PROBLEMS for YOU!
I QUIT! Ubuntu is now DEAD! GOODBYE!
