11.04 on Thinkpad 2657 - graphics on monitor is not stable - moves/flickers

Asked by wsimson

I have a thinkpad 2657-77u with a bad LCD Screen and have an lcd monitor attached. It works fine under windows xp, but when I boot to Ubuntu 11.04 the video output moves and flickers rendering it unuseable. I have tried to change display settings - the refresh rate appears as 0 and cannot be changed - what do I do to make it work?

I now have Ubuntu installed by itself on the laptop and have changed to classic mode with no extras but I still have the flicker and moving graphics which fill up 3/4's of the monitor. How do I go in and add the nomodeset. Or do I just reload Ubuntu 10.4?

How do I go in and add the nomodeset" : "Should be explained here http://ubuntu-tutorials.com/2010/05/06/ubuntu-10-04-lucid-blank-screen-at-startup-workaround/
You have to edit file /etc/default/grub as explained in https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2#Configuring%20GRUB%202 for line GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT

Are these the same instructions for 11.04. 10.4 works out of the box for
the computer. Should I just wait for updates to 11.04 before loading or
stay where I am?

Yes it works, I hope that one day this problem will be fixed. We regularly see it since one year.
Don't wait updates, I will not to surprised to see this bug again with 11.10!

Can you help with this problem?
