Extended desktop in ubuntu 9.10

Asked by dooboy

Installed 9.10 on my Dell Inspiron 6400, having run 9.04 as a partition on the same laptop. Never had any problem with extending the desktop to an external samsung monitor, but since upgrade can only 'mirror screens'. Any attempt to set up extended desktop causes the screens to blank and the mouse and keyboard to cease functioning. Have tried using inbuilt display settings, and 'multiple screens' and 'Arandr' from the ubuntu software centre, all with the same results.

This seems to be because of some issues with X server, or your graphics
card, try disabling compiz and then go to Display and then try extending
screens :)

disabling compiz allows me to have an extended desktop but now I can't choose which screen will be the primary output (i.e. have the panels and task bars) which I would like to do if possible, as the default is back to front from the way I'd like it.
