Blank black monitor screen after downloading Ubuntu 9.04

Asked by Ken Warwick

I have a 3dfx video card and a Samsung SyncMaster 204T monitor. When I boot Ubuntu 9.04 the end result is a blank black monitor screen after the initial startup sequence runs. I see the Ubuntu line, than a half screen than a couple of small circles and then it goes to the blank black screen and stays there. I cannot run any commands because I cannot see anything on the screens. I am fairly new to Ubuntu and have only rudimentary programming skills where I can follow instructions if I can see what I am doing on the screen

Can you try booting up from the Ubuntu Cd and follow the "Try Ubuntu without making changes to my machine" option to get to a working desktop? If this works we call it a "LiveCd session"

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

This sounds like a problem with your xorg configuration. What I would suggest doing is when you first boot the machine, select "recovery mode" this will drop you into single user mode (or run level 1 if I'm not mistaken). From there, you should be able to able to enter commands as root. You may be presented with some sort of menu, just select "drop to root shell" or whatever it's called. Type the following command:

# dpkg-reconfigure xserver -xorg

Then follow the prompts, this will regenerate your xorg.conf file, so if there's anything you like in, you should back it up first

# cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf~

Brilliant Drew :)) I knew there was something like this but didn't know even roughly what it was! I guess this would be better run from the "recovery mode" rather than a normal command-line, because with x-server already running it might be a little tricky otherwise ;)

@ Ken
Please either use the links to post messages directly into the thread at launchpad or else please delete from the bottom of you email all the stuff we have sent you as we already have that in the thread here and it gets messy when you send it back to us again. If you have trouble getting to "recovery mode" i have a few tricks to help so just let us know.

Good luck and regards all from
Tom :)

Hi Tom,

Thank you guys for all the suggestions. I am working on this as I type here-other computer.

Tom, sorry about the emails business--I didn't know that and will comply from now on. Sorry about the delay in getting back on-line everybody, but the alligators appeared at work last Fri snapping at my heals. So far nothing has worked here. I did get into Recovery Mode and got to a Menu. I tried a few things there and the result was a repair attempt, but it failed, because I was unable to download a file that was needed. I am going to try again and will post the results. Ken

Aww heck, sorry no-one has got back to you about this. Launchpad doesn't have a mechanism for dealing with older questions so it's worth re-posting this as a new question. Hopefully there has been some movement in us understand what the problem is so that might help post a new question

Good luck with this, regards from
Tom :)
