Ok, for me what happens is I am trying to install Ubuntu 7.04. When I boot it from the install disk that I burned(downloaded from your site), it starts starting up stuff, then all of the sudden a screen will pop up (blue screen type thing):

"Failed to start the X Server
It is likely that it was not set up correctly"

Here is some other stuff that I read when looking at the details of it(I'm not sure what is relevant or not since I am a complete newbie at linux!)
VESA: No matching mode
Screens found but none have a usable configuration
Fatal Server Error: No screens found

Thank you in advance and I'll be looking forward to your response :)

ngl, it would be better if you start a new question. This is not a forum, but a support site.
Anyhow, you can start by looking at this page:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DebuggingXAutoconfiguration

And please let us know what video card you have.

After going through the install proceeder's and finishing up with no x server etc. etc - I am left with a black screen and flashing curser in the top left hand corner - I have imputed all of the various suggested command lines in Launchpad questions/answers over the last few weeks but nothing happens.
The commands are not recognized (or do not get through) .......does that help any?

Debugging driver errors on the Live CD is quite unconfortable. So I'd recommend you download the Feisty Fawn Alternate Install CD. Just go to "http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download" and click "Check here if you need the alternate desktop CD".

If the problem still exists after a successfull installation, we're quite happy to assist you with more information requests and hints.

Did you get my last message?

By the looks of it no!

Feisty has a different problem that it goes through the install procedure and stops with the message of NO SIGNAL just after the kernel has been opened. My own feeling is that there is a problem with my machine but for the life of me everything works with MS an I don't understand it

while I understand your frustration and unhappyness, don't you think that some cooperation from your side would be helpfull for the guys that spend their spare time and resources to try helping others with their problems?

Please take the time to write down exactly what is your problem. You know your hardware and what you did, these guys don't.

Not sure I can be more explicit but here goes

6.10

Run disc (Official one - not down load) after re booting windows system

Offered choice to install etc - hit install button
kernel decompresses, kernel opens ( top right of screen)
message that X Server not the right one etc, etc
look at all information confirming ATI card is correct in all respects
nothing appears to be incorrect on this screen
Exit X server information which closes GDU
I finish up with a black screen and a flashing cursor (top right) which can not communicate with the Ubuntu disc

7.04

Same as above except after kernel opens a no signal received banner appears and I cant key to the disc

Thanks for the additional info John.
On what machine (CPU, video card, monitor, etc.) are you trying to install Ubuntu?

>message that X Server not the right one

Usually error messages are more verbose. It would help to have the precise error message. It should also offer you to see the content of your Xorg.0.log file, which can be valuable to understand what went wrong.
Please check it and make note of all lines beginning with a (WW) or (EE).

>no signal received banner

This doesn't seem to be a message coming from the installer. It appears to be a monitor message. Can you check if this same signal appears in WInXP if you disconnect the video cable?

As Markus suggested, it is very difficult to debug problems with the Live CD. It would be much better if you can download and install from the Alternate CD. This is based on a text driven installer and is much more robust to this type of problems.
After the installation you will likely suffer from the same problem, but it will be much easier for us to support you in its resolution.

It's not my time for installing Ubuntu I ditched my old machine and acquired a new HP7750 with Vista pre-installed (Home Premium) Intel dual processor - Windows installed like a dream with all the bells & whistles. It took its time but went through it's routines like a good one - I down loaded 7.04 and for good measure downloaded the Text version just to be on the safe side.

The text version installed with no apparant problems everything went at high speed and GRUB 1.5 was sitting there showing Windows & Ubuntu BUT Vista boots with no problem however 7.04 starts but all i get is a black screen with a blue message saying "signal out of reach"

Any ideas

Yes,

we need to set the right refresh rates in your xorg.conf file.
Can you find them in the docs which came with the PC? We need both the horizontal and vertical sync rates.
Horizontal is usually some tens KHz while vertical is usually in the range 30-100 Hz

Revision history for this message
Sam Cater (wraund-deactivatedaccount) said :

The 'Signal out of reach' error is similar to something I had recently,
is the blue message coming from the monitor itself. If so then it is
almost identical.

Cesare is correct. It is to do with the frequency and resolution range of the monitor

Hi Guys

Thanks info
- I have a Toshiba 20WLT56B LCD Integrated Digital TV monitor which is set at 1360 H and 768 V ( H 47.6 kHz & V60 Hz) this info taken from manual can be adjusted but only by slide bars from monitor remote control - can not be changed from CPU system as far as I can see.

Can not find xorg.conf Vista hides it well

When 7.04 was first installed the opening screen was there in full colour so the monitor could see the signal then.. getting a bit lost now.

More help would be appreciated

OK,

lets try this. Boot in recovery/safe mode (its one of the options on the boot menu).
Once you boot you will be sitting in fron of a console, with a prompt.
Type this command at the prompt:

sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Now add these lines in your "Monitor" section:

   HorizSync 30-69
   VertRefresh 50-75

Check also that in your "Screen" section there is a line in the subsection "Display" with a Depth of 24 and at least these Modes "1360x768" "1024x768" "800x600"

Save the file and reboot normally.

If you need help on how to use nano please type this command:

man nano (go up and down with PgUP/PgDwn or arrow keys, exit with q).

I have made the changes you specified and managed to save them ( I think!!)
Things have changed not in the way I had hoped but its some progress - when Ubuntu loads for a brief second you see what I assume is the colorful opening screen trying to load BEFORE the signal out of range message appears.

If you then press the enter key we now get the X Server can't open screen again if you read all the script it lines up correctly with everything I think I have done to date

Thats the problem of not being joung any more (I think you mean young unless it's a geeky word).
Anyway we have perhaps gone three steps forward and two back, so what do I do now?

No, joung its a John-young (actually, its a Dutch-ism ....).

The only way we can help you any further is to have a look at the file ourselves.
Do you have a fat32 partition that you can access from linux?
If so, copy the file there and then paste it here through windows.

For instance, if your fat32 partition is hdb1 you can copy it with this command:

cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /media/hdb1/.

If the same partition is, for example, D:\ in windows, then you will find it there from windows.

If you don't know what fat32 is, than I don't think you have a fat32 partition.

In that case you may want to do it with a floppy/usb key.

1) Insert your windows formatted floppy in the floppy reader
2) Type this command: sudo mount -t vfat /dev/fd0 /media/floppy0
3) Give your password
4) Type this other command: sudo cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /media/floppy0/.
5) When the copy is finished type this command: sudo shutdown -r now
6) During post (power on self test) remove floppy (unless boot is disabled from floppy in bios)
7) Once in windows copy the content of the file A:\xorg.conf and paste here

Be careful, at the end of the command in 4) there is a . (<-dot)

PS. It could be a good idea to have a look at this page: http://www.linux.org/lessons/beginner/
Some things are a bit outdated and some are not applicable to Ubuntu but it could be a good starting point to learn more about Linux.

I need to know what is your video card. If you don't know, type this commmand once logged in your recovery session and give me the output:

lspci

Thanks.

Once I get this, I will paste here a copy of my xorg.conf file, with modifications suitable for your usage. Print this, boot back again into recovery mode, open your xorg.conf file (sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf), compare it with mine, make changes if necessary, save and try booting again (this time in a normal session).

Pay particular attention to the format. Each Section must finish with an EndSection, each SubSection with an End SubSection. Don't worry too much about the Files, Module and InputDevice sections for the time being.

I know what you mean, its so frustrating. I spent about an hour with my mother on the phone yesterday (73) trying to solve her Outlook problem.
If I could get my dirty hands on your computers I would solve your problems in 5 minutes (each :-)).

The only thing I can propose you is to install this program in your Windows partition:

http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/ext2fsd/Ext2Fsd-0.31a.exe?download

This will allow you to read and write to your Linux disk from Windows. If you manage to install this, you can use this to send me your file, I edit it, send it back to you and then you copy it back to Linux.

Unfortunately you have Vista which will not allow you to install uncertified software, so it can be tricky for you to install it.
Here I can't help you, I don't have Vista and I don't want to touch it ever if I can.
These are the instructions you have to follow:

1, Press F8 when booting vista, and select "disable driver
signature checking", this way works if you want only to
try ext2fsd once, you also need remove it after usage.

2, The other way is to use it in test mode:
(Run as Administrator to do the followings)
2.1, adding the Ext2Fsd.cer to system
            certmgr.exe /add Ext2Fsd.cer /s /r localMachine root
            certmgr.exe /add Ext2Fsd.cer /s /r localMachine trustedpublisher
     2.2, enable test signing:
            bcdedit.exe /set TESTSIGNING ON
     2.3, install the driver package
run setup.bat or ext2fsd install package

You are on your own here John good luck .....

Is there no way I can copy the xorg file (or anything else) on to a
floppy (or CD) from the dos command line in recovery mode - it cant be
that inflexible
The thing that terrifies me is losing the ability of sending/receiving
emails and being lost in cyberspace without a paddle!

Tell you what, Oxford is not that far away from the Hampshire county (at least its the same region ....), so, why not contacting these guys:

http://hants.lug.org.uk

They seems to be a quite active and helpfull bunch. Our Alan Pope is an administrator there, they should be able to help you or at least refer you to a local Oxford group where you can find an hands-on support.
