Ubunto 8.10 Server - Black Screen/No Gnome
Moved a working HP DL380 Server that I finally got Ubuntu 8.10 installed on into a server rack with a KVM switch.
Problem is, when starting up, the GUI interface starts up with a black screen (Does not go out of range nor show anything else) on screen.
Using Ctrl-Alt-F1, I can pull up a terminal and log in, however, tried using various answers from here with no luck in getting the GUI to show up.

The reason for the blank screen is that the video mode Xserver requested is not supported by the graphic card. But I don't know how to fix it since the new Xorg does not use xorg.conf any longer.

Okay... Is there a way to revert it via console then? Cause I know prior to running the updates, I was getting the GUI on startup.

The old way of doing it is to modify xorg.conf file. But as I said, it might not work with the new Xorg coming with 8.10

Please try to press CTRL+ALT+F2 make login with your user and password and type:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg
sud reboot
give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.
Hope this helps

I forgot the "o" ... so the last command is
sudo reboot

Gave that a try, no luck still. No Ubuntu splash screen, still blank black screen for Ctrl-Alt-F7.

Is there anything I should be looking at to find out why the GUI is not showing anything but a blank/black screen? It's like it isn't using the video. This also seemed to happen after I did the auto updates. I shut down the server so I could move it into the server room and when it started up, I see nothing on the screen, but saw I could ping the machine and log onto it via ssh2. After looking at other things I saw that I could get a terminal window, but given I am the only one who knows more about LINUX that most of the other people in the company, the option of leaving it as a terminal isn't much of an option.

Upon further investigation and looking at http://
The Ubuntu splash/load screen shows... But then immediately it goes to a blank (black) screen. It didn't do this when I had a monitor hooked directly to it when I first started working with the machine, which leads me to wonder about how this is currently setup.
At the moment, here is what is on the server's xorg.conf:
-------------
Section "Device"
Identifier "Configured Video Device"
Option "UseFBDev" "true"
EndSection
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Configured Monitor"
EndSection
Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
Monitor "Configured Monitor"
Device "Configured Video Device"
EndSection
-----------
With the live CD boot, it just had Device line. At the moment, the server is hooked up to a third party KVM switch, namely a KVM switch bought from Dell that uses 'pods' that hook up to the switch with RJ45 cables. I am guessing that the Ubuntu thinks the system is 'dead headed' so it doesn't know what to send to the monitor. Which now leads me to wonder what I can do to get it to know there is a monitor, namely, a Viewsonic 503B LCD monitor it can connect to it?

Re-opening question as I still like to see if there is a way to resolve this issue. Again, with few people at my location who know Unix, let alone Linux, I rather have them to have the option of the GUI should I not be around.

Re-bumping this request, as I will still have users who want to be able to use the desktop. Until a definitive answer is given.

My video card has three different video out ports. Normally, the system will automatically detect which one I'm using on startup. I have an adapter that lets me use see what's on the other video ports, but the output is all garbled (It normally is). Nothing I do (Control-Alt-F1, Control-Alt-F2 or Control-Alt-F2) will make anything show up on any of the ports. However, I can boot from the server install cd and it displays on one of my normally unused ports (VGA).
The Ports are as follows:
VGA
DVI-D
S-VIDEO (What I Normally Use)
Graphics card is a PCI PNY card with a NVidia GeForce 6200, 256mb (Also have motherboard video, haven't tested that)
Can you help with this problem?
