WINE windows interface

Asked by Greg Bell

Hi Folks -
This is my first posting on Launchpad, so please bear with me if I'm barking up the wrong board...

I'm fairly new to shareware, and I run XUBUNTU, which my son installed

I downloaded some windows-based software today (to do back taxes - aroint!) to an executable file, and I can't read it. I downloaded WINE, but it's 'weak wine' at the moment. I suspect I haven't fully installed it (it's under APPLICATIONS on my desktop,) because when I go into FILE pulldown to OPEN I get "Not Yet Implemented."

Also, under FILE pulldown, if I select RUN & enter the file name (as copied from the file,) I get "Invalid File."

When I try the HELP pulldown, it reads "Cannot find Winefile."

I've tried opening the UNINSTALL, but I get "Uninstall registry key not available (yet), nothing to do." I'm no IT guy. I write with a freakin' quill pen. Does anybody out there have any suggestions?

Thanx,
gb

Ouch! Talk about pulling fingernails off with rusty pliers... back taxes AND a new user with WINE!
OK, I'll be of little help here in the final solution, but if you could provide more detail as follows, someone here has the knowledge (and masochism) to get you fixed up. Cue: Bavi.... time to rack up some karma, buddy.
1- What program are you attempting to install under wine?
2- have you visited http://www.winehq.org/ to see if the program you wish to use has been "cerified"?
3- Do you really want to do you taxes in WINE? If you have a spare partition with that other (evil) OS on there, ahem... We're dealing with the feds here, so...

Good Luck!

PS It's Open Source, not shareware as there is no "cost" or trial periods
=)

I got in & did the deed (so now Bush can pay for his cluster bombs...)

I went into add/remove, removed WINE, then reinstalled it. Don't know
if this was necessary, but then I

Right-clicked on the download, typed in "wine", and the rest, as they
say, is history.

Glad you're here. I'll be around.

There may be a linux alternative if you don't have to use that particular piece of software.

Try GnuCash or even OpenOffice Calc (spreadsheet)

or maybe your son still has windows on that computer. When your computer turns on, press the down arrow key (keep pressing it) until you see a menu with text you can highlight. Find the text option (whitish text on a black background) that says "Windows" and start that up.

hope that helps!

Thanks, the help is awesome.

I DID find a way to open the software with WINE, by right clicking on
the software icon & typing in "wine" to open. Worked pretty well. Had
a problem, tho, and called tech service, where the guy told me - in an
eerie, friendly drone-like voice (like Hal in "2001":) "I'm sorry. We
don't support Linux."

("Open the pod bay doors, Hal!"

"I'm sorry, Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that.")

He probably went out back after your call to beat a pig to death with a femur.

Nothing helps make friends faster than a pig roast...
=)

Can you help with this problem?
