Yeah. You can!
By the aid of a virtual machine, like virtualbox or vmWare, you can run two or more system simultaneously on one PC.
Firthermore, those virtual machines are very easy to use.

How much hard space a ubuntu system will use depends on how much program you wanna install.
Typically, 2.5GB to 4GB

Come back to the virsual machine issue.
Please tell me 1. if you want the two system on in the same time or not;
2. if yes, which one is a host that you want; the host will install a virtual machine on which the other system will be install on.

Password? you mean you have install a ubuntu on a virtual machine then you need a password?

Yes I like this OS and I think it's better than Vista.

OK!
You can google and download a virual machine for your vista OS and install it on your vista system.

1. run the virtual machine (as you run other program on vista, double click ...)
2. "New" a MACHINE
3. Do some config, I mean follow the "next"
4. Insert your ubuntu CD into you CD drive, (to make your CD drive accessable to your virtual machine, you and to do something, just do some setting)
5. "start" the MACHINE

then you can see something like you can see when you start your PC.

Sorry! I cannot detail every step. But why not google "how to use virtual box"
:)

By the way, for a virtual machine, I recommend virtualbox.

Hi all,

I am not really sure that the original question has been really understood (or perhaps I don't understand it myself).

A) Is it possible to have Windows and Ubuntu on the same machine?
Definitely yes. If you install Ubuntu and choose to keep the Windows partition (it is supposed to be very clear in the partition editor), then you will have to choose to launch Windows OR Ubuntu when you boot your computer. It is (by far!) the most stable and recommended thing to do. Both systems will be completely separated, Ubuntu will launch and use Linux programs, Windows will use Windows program, and that's it. In particular, no need of Norton-whatever when running Ubuntu. Keep both systems as long as you want; at one point you can even get rid of Windows if you prefer Ubuntu.

B) Is is possible to run Ubuntu at the same time as running Linux?
Yes, it is the thing about the "virtual machine" above. My main question is "why for"? I cannot see any use of this for a basic usage. It is complicated and somewhat bugged. My advice is: don't do that if you don't know why you are doing that.

C) How do I know if Ubuntu works with my hardware?
You can of course have a look at Ubuntu web site, you will find many information about which hardware is supported, what are the minimal requirement to run the system, etc. However, there is a much simpler way: just burn a Ubuntu CD, insert it in your computer and reboot. If the BIOS is configured properly (boot from the CD first), Ubuntu will be launched without installing anything (just choose the "live session"). Note that it will be a bit slow, because reading a CD is much slower than reading a hard drive. However, you will be able to see if the video card is working, if the sound is working, and more importantly, if the network is working. If everything is OK, then you know that your hardware is supported, and you can reboot and choose the "install" option.

Hope this clarifies any misunderstanding!

To install virtualbox

Open a Terminal from the menu Applications → Accessories → Terminal and type:

sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude install virtualbox-ose
sudo aptitude install virtualbox-ose-guest-utils

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you
type it, then press enter.

Hope this helps

Hi mikesatv,

marcobra makes a mistake; what he said is to install a virtualbox on a ubuntu host, but you need to install a virtualbox on a vista host.

You can refer to http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads to get all info you need about virtualbox on a Windows host.

Besides, you can easily find a download link there.

Best,

Virtualbox allows you to run another OS inside an OS. So, if you like vista and want to use it most of the time but want to be able to see and experience Ubuntu while still running vista you can load the virtual OS without ever leaving vista. This is cool if you do a lot of testing or just like to play or really like one app that only works in that OS.

I think what you are asking is can you have both vista and Ubuntu on the same computer but not really running at the same time. Yes, you can do this. Many people will dual boot windows and Ubuntu. Once installed along side vista you can choose which OS to boot when you turn the computer on and switch by rebooting and choosing the other.

Can you clarify which solution you are interested in?

hi mikesatv,

To make it logical:

1. You need two OS simultaneously on you PC, then you HAVE TO install virtualbox (other virtual machine is OK);
2. You said you need the main OS to be Vista, then you HAVE TO install a windows-based virtualbox;
3. Only when you have the windows-based virtualbox installed, you can install ubuntu on this virtualbox;
4. To install ubuntu on your virtualbox, please refer to http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads or follow step 5;

5. Install ubuntu on virtualbox
   5.1. run the virtualbox (as you run other program on vista, double click ...)
   5.2. "New" a MACHINE
   5.3. Do some config, I mean follow the "next"
   5.4. Insert your ubuntu CD into your CD drive, (to make your CD drive accessable to your virtualbox, you and to do something, just do some settings by click "Setting")
   5.5. "start" the MACHINE to begin your installation

P.S.: virtualbox is a program (like those you use everyday) which allows you to have more than one OS function on one PC at the same time.

P.S of P.S.: Just try it! You will understand everything at that moment.

Have you installed ubuntu on your virtualbox?
If you did, your user name and password should be set when you were
installing it.

I guess what you have depicted above is the first screen when you run the
CD, isn't it?
In that case, try to install it.

Hi all,

I repeat my previous comment: I really think we completely screwed this question. The OP never mentioned any of the virtualbox thing, why did you go to that complicated direction? Please reread the original question, the question was : can I have Windows and Ubuntu on the same computer; I really believe the answer was YES, and simply detail what a double boot is. Virtualbox has nothing to do here, and most answers were extremely confusing.

Hi mikesatv,
First, virtualbox has free version or free license!
Second, I cannot get you about this "i cant see my drives on network my
other computers as my user name but i can see them if i sign in as a guest".
Punctuations, please. :-)

Hi Arnaudus,
Nothing personal, but maybe you missed something.
The OP said he want:
"main os on here is windows vista";
and he need them at the same time.
That is why I think he needs a virtual machine. And, of course, some one
could have better idea than virtualbox.
