Cannot use or utilize my second internal hard disk

Cannot use or utilize my second hard disk - Object not accessible

Good day to all. I am new to Ubuntu and would like to inquire if someone has an answer which would enable me to use my second HDD .

1)- My PC has two INTERNAL hard drives (250 GB & 30 GB), and Ubuntu 9.04 is installed on the larger HD ( logical name: /dev/sda has format ext3). Ununtu is the ONLY OS on the PC. The 30GB hard disk (logical name: /dev/sdb ) was formatted (ext3) off-line (using Partition Magic 8.0) and has a single partition. Presently there is no user data on this disk – the only system generated (??) data is a lost+found folder

2)- The Problem is: After mounting (via right click on drive icon in Nautilus, and clicking Mount) the 30GB HD, I cannot save, copy , or paste any document or folder on the 30GB (/dev/sdb) disk. It seems I don't have access to this disk, although the disk is visible from the file browser (Nautilus), and in the partition editor gparted . However, when I check in gparted>patition>information I get :

file system: ext3
size: 27.94 GiB
used: 930.71 MiB
unused: 27.03 GiB
flags:
path: /dev/sdb1
status: Not mounted
Lable:
UUID:
.
.

When I attempted to save a text document (Test1) to the disk ( /dev/sdb ) , the save operation failed, and I received th following system message :

“ Error saving the document Test1. Object not accessible. The object cannot be accessed due to insufficient user rights”

3)- Here is the result of executing command “ sudo fdisk -l ” from Terminal:

gka@Asus-old:~$ sudo fdisk -l

[sudo] password for gka:

Disk /dev/sda: 250.0 GB, 250059350016 bytes

255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 30401 cylinders

Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

Disk identifier: 0xfbe1fbe1

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System

/dev/sda1 * 1 15425 123901281 83 Linux

/dev/sda2 29651 30401 6032407+ 5 Extended

/dev/sda5 29651 30401 6032376 82 Linux swap / Solaris

Disk /dev/sdb: 30.0 GB, 30003240960 bytes

255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 3647 cylinders

Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System

/dev/sdb1 1 3647 29294496 83 Linux

gka@Asus-old:~$

Can anyone please help provide an answer to enable me to make full use (read / write / save and delete info) of my 30GB hard disk drive? Many thanks,

George A

Answer to Delan Azabani: Yes, I'm clicking on Places>drive icon, thank you for your input. Within the past 1 hour I came across an answer provide by applecache on 2009-10-18 in his answer to Bob Cashatt

https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+question/86250

and this solved my problem. However, before proceeding with the above process I needed to mount the hard drive ( I used the method you describe and subsequently the drive icon appeared on the desktop). Many thanks to applecache and to Delan Azabani.

George A suggests this article as an answer to your question:

Cannot use my formatted second hard disk, but I can see it in Nautilus and in gparted - Object not accessible

FAQ #118: “Installing Ubuntu”.

I've not been using Ubuntu for some time & have forgotten what I did some
time ago. I'm sorry that I can't answer your question. Suggest searching in
more recent answers / resolution in your problem area. It would be well to
indicate the VERSION of Ubuntu you're using, & to provide information about
your hardware configuration.
