Cannot access second hard disk

Asked by Bob Cashatt

I am using Ubuntu 9.04. I have a second hard disk installed. I can see it in PLACES/COMPUTER, and I can open it but I cannot do anything with the drive. When I try to make a folder I am told that I do not have permission. It does mount and shows on the desktop. It seems like all of my problems with Ubuntu are permissions. I have searched the problem/answer files and cannot find the solution to my problem.

Hello

This is a common mistake. i am pretty sure that you recently re-formatted this hard drive space into whatever filesystem you chose being ext3/4/ntfs etc.

What you should do is sudo nautilus and then your password. This will bring up a graphical filesystem display with folders that you can click on etc no terminal commnads are needed here.

Navigate to the hard drive in question and then right-click anywhere and select Properties >> Permissions.

Where you see Owner ( the very first one) select and scroll upward to your username of your pc/laptop etc.

Under Folder access ( the very second one) make sure it says Create and delete files.

Under File access ( the very third one) make sure it says --- which i guess is default.

Then you will be ok.

Many thanks applecache, I had a similar problem (i'm using 9.04) with a ext3 formatted second hard drive. i first had to mount my hard drive (places>click drive icon) and then follow the procedure you've described, and this solved the problem. Again, many thanks.
