Error message: "mount point /mnt/cdrom does not exist"

I'm trying to install Corel WordPerfect for Linux from a CD accompanying the book "WordPerfect for Linux Bible."

You might be able to solve this problem with:

sudo mkdir /mnt/cdrom

Otherwise, please provide *way* more information, including everything that you have done so far. Make sure to include all the text from the Terminal (Edit > Select All; Edit > Copy).

Thanks for the prompt reply. I got this message following the command:

sudo mount /media/cdrom /mnt/cdrom

Earlier I simply used: mount /media/cdrom /mnt/cdrom

The directory cdrom was created in mnt along with the contents expected in
cdrom. However, when I used install ./install.wp the installation failed.

So, i don't know what has happened; I got nothing when I used edit > copy.

Did you select the text first (Edit > Select All)?

Please note also that nothing will appear to happen when you copy text. You then have to return to Launchpad (or your email) and paste the text with Ctrl+V.

I was able to create the directory with: sudo mkdir /mnt/cdrom. When I entered ./ I got "Warning: The graphical install program has failed. Trying to run the character-based install program." The installation failed. So the initial problem is solved and now I have a second one.

The entry that got the warning and the subsequent faired installation was:
./ install.wp, not just ./ .

What version of Ubuntu are you using, and what distributions of linux does the book claim to support? If the disk is too old, the necessary libraries will have been updated/changed.

So, I still think I would far better understand what is going on if you select the entire contents of the Terminal (Edit > Select All), copy it to the clipboard (Edit > Copy), and paste it here. You have still not indicated if you have tried this (i.e. if you had selected the text before you tried to copy it).

I'm trying to install WordPerfect 8 Personal Edition that found in the book, "WordPerfect for Linux Bible," published in in 1999. This is a licensed version by Coral. The book lists Linux distributions: Red Hat, S.u.S.E., Debian, etc. The distribution I have installed is Ubuntu version number 10.04 LTS. I assume that is based on Debian. It requires X-Window which is confirmed running via startx. I'm new to linux and this is my first attempt to install anything not available in the Synaptic Package Manager.

The book's install instruction seemed fairly simple from the terminal window: 1. Type startx, 2. mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom 3. cd /mnt/cdrom, (which you got me through. The next is where the real trouble began: I typed ./install.wp (which is in the /mnt/cdrom.

Given the age of this publication, I may not be able to use this version unless major updates are made, or perhaps,and I hope, you will notice something simple that I can correct. I dedicated to drop all connection with Microsoft, plus I'm a WordPerfect die hard. Here's the output from edit > copy that I got following ./install.wp: (Thanks for the hint on using Edit.)

A 12 year old disk, probably targeting a 13+ year old version of a Linux operating system -- I doubt it will be runnable on Ubuntu 10.04, but your error was of a more fundamental nature -- the program was not found.
When you mount the cdrom, and go to the directory, do
ls -l linux/ins
Do you see the wpinstg program? Is it executable? Does it have the right case? Does it have any extension like exe, or com?
Lots of pretty elementary things were messed up on the early CDs.
If you find the program you think is the graphical installer, try
ldd wpinstg
on it to see the libraries it needs, and if they are available.
Try to run as root
sudo ./install.wp
Look at OpenOffice (or LibreOffice these days) -- it should import all your old WP files, and may even have a keybinding for WP users.

I agree that you may want to use OpenOffice.org or LibreOffice, and I'd add that if you want a lighter-weight but still highly functional word processor, you should check out AbiWord. In case you have not succeeded at installing WP8 and still want to try, there appears to be some useful information at http://tldp.org/FAQ/WordPerfect-Linux-FAQ/downloadwp8.html.
