1 Tb Seagate Free Agent External Hard Drive
I Just recently acquired a 1 TB external hard drive ( Seagate Free Agent Desk) USB 2.0 i have also had Ubuntu for the grand total of a week. Every time I plug in my External Hard Drive, nothing happens. I can't find it on the computer, nor can I find any information on the web regarding it, or that is understandable. I do know that it shouldn't matter what Operating System its on. I was hoping that someone could give me simple-

OK we need some troubleshooting info. Make sure that the hard drive is connected to your machine and powered on (if it as external power)
Can you open a terminal, by either pressing CTRL+ALT+T, or from the applications menu, then paste the following commands into it. This will generate some output, which we need to understand your systems, and you will need to cut and paste it back here.
sudo fdisk -l
mount
lsusb
Now take the USB cable out, and then plug it back in, then paste this command:
dmesg | tail -n 50
and also paste the output back here.
This should give us the info we need to guide you further.

when you click on places, do you see it? you might see an entry called free agent or seagate.

OK, your device is not being seen at the electrical level.
*Do other devices work in that USB port -- a thumb USB drive for example?
*Can you try other USB ports on the machine?
* Does the externa drive have a secondary power supply, or only a USB cable?

All of the USB ports work. I plugged my thumb drive into all four. My hard drive does come with an adapter. The hard drive is plugged into the adapter and I also have the USB plugged in. When I was running those tests you were asking for, it wasn't plugged into the adapter. The light on the hard drive is on also now. But I still can't find it anywhere on the computer. No USB symbol or window or anything comes up.
(But at least now I know it has to be plugged into the adapter :) All of the other hard drives I've used before never had to be plugged in, and it's not like that give you a booklet either. (sigh))

OK, we will need to re-run the tests, with the drive now plugged in and powered up.

Hi, did you get the output of "mount" as well? The drive is recognised and the partition is there.

Whilst you are at it to, it may (not guaranteed) be neccesary to get the contents of your filesystem mount table.
can you run
cat /etc/fstab

There might be a "5-year old easy" way to fix it
1. with the computer off plug in and power on the drive.
2. boot up
3. insert the installer cd (or usb ) and reboot
4. run ubuntu from the installer (live cd or usb) and see if the drive is present. It should be
5. restart with the cd in the drive
6. choose "boot from first hard disk" from the live cd menu.
be sure to turn the drive on and wait for it to power up before you start, and do not unplug it or turn it off till you're done
Worked for me.

Could you provide result of command:
ls -l /media
Perhaps disk is mounted, but GUI (Gnome) doesn't display related icon.
If disk is not mounted, we will have to add a line in /etc/fstab.

Do you have the package Mountmanager installed? It will show under System>
While you are reading up on mount manager keep in mind that with Linux, your drives appear as file directories rather than as a letter followed by a colon (x:) like they do with windows. Also the Filesystem location of the drive is usually NOT the "mount point" of a usb drive. I won't get into all the reason why, just that it is infinitely easier to give the drive what is known as a dynamic mount point. It is not hard to do with the mount manager application. The main thing is be sure to put the mount point in a directory that you have administrative rights to, like say your home folder. Also set the options in mount manager to give yourself (or all users) rights to add and delete, and change files.
This all sounds a lot harder than it really is. Get mount manager. Read up a bit and if you need me to walk with you through it we can do that. I had similar issues until I figured out how to use mount manager.
Can you help with this problem?
