Please don't remove original question, it make thread difficult to follow.
You add at top a summary to describe current state.

Do you get same error ?

Im sorry, I was told to open a new question and I really didn't know
what to do with linking it...as I said at the start of the other
question, I am very new to all of this stuff.

Can you post result of command:
   ls -l /media/cdrom0/
(with DVD in drive, obviously) and
   ls -l /media

Also, this time when I put the dvd in I got this pop up message a few
seconds before VLC opened:
Failed to mount "va=dvd".

Could you run command:
   vlc /media/BATTLESTAR_GALACTICA_S1D1
and report errors, if occurs ones.
Obviously, replace BATTLESTAR_GALACTICA_S1D1 by your own CD.

Can you help with this problem?
