no USB function after loading ubuntu 10.04

Asked by Koos

I used fedora to format my laptop HDD. then loaded Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid-Lynx. When I now click on "Places" and the look at the list I see the presence of my Flash drives or external Hard drive.
Problem : when I want to work with any of them I get the error message that it cannot be mounted.
If the drivers required for this performance is in the kernel, what can I do about the situation? I searched the software center but see no product that looks like it can fulfill the function.
(I plaid with every driver without success)
