How to make a bootable Ubuntu flash drive and run FSCK

Asked by John Umenwoke

I want to set up a Foxconn NT-510 nettop box running Ubuntu. I was told to make an Ubuntu bootable flash drive to run FSCK off of. I need directions on how to accomplish this. I am not sure what version of Ubuntu was installed in the box and if it does matter. I run Ubuntu 10.10 and 5.10 in two different systems with internet access. Your help will very much be appreciated. Please be as simplified as possible.

You can press ALT+F2 and run:

gksudo usb-creator-gtk

You will have needed to download (and MD5 test) an ISO to transfer to a USB device. Have the USB partition unmounted and you can then tell the app to put the image on the device and you can then boot to that and get the live CD desktop.

Thanks for your reply. I am not very comfortable with your directions since I am not that deep yet in Linux.  But I used UNetbootin along with Ubuntu Iso image to do it. UNetbootin created it in the USB drive and made it bootable. The bootable USB also contain MD5 and other Ubuntu files that gave me more confidence that it will do the job since the USB is Ubuntu boot able.

I tried it and it gave me the Ubuntu booting prompts.  I am going to try inputing FSCK at the terminal prompt hopefully it will reconfigure the Ubuntu based unit to work properly.

Are you familiar with UNetbootin? and do you thing it gave me the desired result that will give me the Terminal prompt to run FSCK?  I hope to hear from you again.

I still need help. Although I have made the bootable Ubuntu flash drive, through another route described above. I just want to confirm which boot line to use at the UNetbootin boot menu that will enable me run FSCK in the unit into which I will stick in the bootable USB.

You don't have to use a special boot line. Just create a live USB for any Linux-based operating system (such as Ubuntu), and make sure it's possible to boot it on the computer you need to use it on.

You might not be familiar with how to use fsck. The manual page may be helpful (and you can search the web for less technical information):
http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/maverick/en/man8/fsck.8.html

That manual page is for fsck in Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick. Click the version link at the top for the manual page from other Ubuntu releases. (But they're all mostly the same.)

Yes the live environment has the command fsck in it. The live USB is the same as an installed OS but it runs in RAM.

Thank for your help. But no one mentioned UNetbootin software that I used. But my hunches tells me that it is the same environment like the live CD but in a flash drive. I will test if this will solve the problem this morning at my job. At that time I will confirm.

Thank you all again for your help and encouragement.

unetbooting is not an environmet. It's not even an OS. It is a software to transfer OS ISOs to the USB so as long as you have done this it doesn't matter about unetbootin in any way. You can use unetbootin to put nearly ANY linux based OS on a USB stick or SD card etc.

Have you put the ISO onto the USB stick using the application yet?

Thank you very much for your reply. I used UNetbootin to put the software on the USB Flash drive. I still had to run FSCK to fix Ubuntu on the unit and it is working ok now.

Thank you all for your help which built my self confidence and determination to solve the problem.

Thank you again.
