XP migrant in need of help

Asked by inaki

Good day guys!

I just migrated from Windows XP and was in the process of installing 'Wine'. I followed each step to the letter but got this upon entering the command line "sudo apt-get install wine"...

"E: Type 'adding' is not known on line 56 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list
E: The list of sources could not be read."

Then I tried the alternative method; Add-Remove Applications. But instantly got this error message:

"Failed to check for installed and available applications

This is a major failure of your software management system. Please check for broken packages with synaptic, check the file permissions and correctness of the file '/etc/apt/sources.list' and reload the software information with: 'sudo apt-get update' and 'sudo apt-get install -f'."

Would appreciate any help you guys can give. Thanks in advance.

Please open a Terminal from the menu Applications → Accessories → Terminal and type:

sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

Then please search on the line 56 the word "adding" is wrong... into the sources.list file.

Or if you are in issue copy and paste the file content here.

Hope this helps

Use the Above content for sources.list

Dont touch again the Sources.list manually or make Backups of original sources.list always,
this is not a major failure of the software management system, this is an error on the sources.list

ok you can go on now, with your installation, the issue with the /etc/apt/sources.list file seems solved.

To test it and to upgrade your system from terminal ...

Please open a Terminal from the menu Applications → Accessories → Terminal and type:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Then...

To install wine in Ubuntu

Please first enable the universe repository:

Open System → Administration → Software sources → [ Tab Ubuntu software ]
enable "Community Maintained open source software (universe)"
Close and confirm the repository reload.

Then open a Terminal from the menu Applications → Accessories → Terminal and type:

sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude install wine

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

Hope this helps
