Ubuntu 8.10 does not install on computer running previous version

Asked by horst hossle

I am trying to upgrade Ubuntu 8.4 from a dvd to 8.10 out of the Linux Format magazine. A panel asking me for the language appears and it starts loading with the gui showing the loading. When the bar reaches its end, the screen goes blank, the dvd runs down and nothing happens thereafter. No button pressing is responsive and I have to soft start again.

Not really sure, but I read some place that it would be better to upgrade to the newer version through download .

Go to system>Software sources>updates and change "release update" to "normal releases" if it currently reads "long term support releases only"

Then go to update manager and version 8.10 will show. download and install. It's a slow process, as about 1225 files need to be downloaded.

I just did this last night, be aware that if you have a dual boot system (Windows and Linux) that you may not be able to boot Windows. That is what happened to me.

Thank you ealthuis, this will probably work, but another problem is connecting to the internet with a speedtouch 330 asdl modem. So, if someone knows how to update from a dvd would be nice to know.

Thanks marcoba, have done as you suggested and installation went fine. At the end when it restarted, it booted as far as the first panel with the ubuntu logo and the orange loading bar. When the bar reached the end, the screen went again blank and everything just powered down into sleep mode. Did cont- alt- del and it came back with the panel showing the 4 versions installed and I chose 1. the file test version, 2 the repair version and 3 the limited install version. Each time no fault detected. What happens after the install screen is finished ? the fault must be in the changeover, for instance not finding the start of the next section of files, or if it is hardware loading, what comes relatively early on? My 8.04 version, which had no trouble, is now gone. No other os is on this machine.

If you have a second disk drive, and a Linux partition on your Windows C: drive do this:
Backup to CD any Linux stuff you need to keep, then:
Boot Windows from your install CD, select "r" for repair, you will get a C:/ response, enter 'help"
One of the items on this list is "partdisk", enter "help partdisk" and it will show you all of the partitions on Windows C: ( no Quotes by the way)
Now if you are willing to do away with your Linux partition and you have room on the second physical HDD to install LInux, delete the Linux partition.
That done place a good Linux 8.10 disk in your CD drive and boot LInux. In my case the upgraded version installed on the second drive, just as I wished. You can make sure of this as the install will want to partition drive "sdb".

If all of this works you will be asked to install upgrades, there are around 250 upgrades to be done, will take some time.

NOTE OF CAUTION, think about all of this carefully, as you will loose the C:Linux partition, and anything that you have in there. It would be good if you could use a blank HDD as the second drive, I had a 40 GB drive available.

Thanks for this, I have managed to load the alternate version of 8.10 on to
the computer, but this also stops booting just after the first screen when
the loading indicator bar is finished and it supposed to load the yellow
screen with the turning little indicator wheel. I gather this could be a
incompatibility with the video card, which is ISM RX9250-T128.The 8.04
version managed fine, but is now replaced, leaving me a dead computer.
This is my experimental one to make transition to Ubuntu of my 3 networked
Windows computers easy and indeed possible, regarding the many programs
needed for language translation that are designed for Windows.

The problem started that the 8.10 iso cd would not boot from the cd or
install itself on the hard disk. The disc would start until it came to the
screen with the orange loading indicator bar, which on reaching its end
flicked off and a blank screen was left, with the pc powering down with no
reaction from any buttons.
Then I downloaded and installed on the computer the alternate version and on
booting the same thing happened, the computer powered down at the end of the
orange indicator bar. This time the three finger salute brought back the
terminal with its options, which I all tried and completed. However it
always in the end comes to rebooting in the above fashion and dying. I can
not get past the orange bar.

hi marcobra, the problem has now been solved.I installed a new nvidio graphics card and the boot up works correctly without further adoo.
I suspected from your answers that xwindow had no driver for the old card. Thanks
