upgrade problems after upgrade to 12.04

Asked by Heinvandijk

The problem is that some packages can not be upgraded on this eee-pc. Almost certainly this problem directly started after upgrading to 12.04. Probably there was a problem with conflicting versions of the packages

Try these commands

~$ sudo apt-get update

~$ sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

the dist-upgrade switch will handle the dependencies problem.

Thanks

If packages are kept back then attemptinig to reinstall them won't work. Do you even know what 'kept back' means and implys?

This file "libeet1" is from E17 environment , correct ?

and this library "libeina1" is also from E17 environment. So think if you added an external PPA and have updated these packages and now you have removed this PPA and these packages cannot installed anymore.

Another thing you can try is this .

~$ wget "http://ubuntuone.com/16urbk8yYDSe1SDhIM18sa" -O ~/fixpackage

~$ chmod +x fixpackage

~$ sudo ./fixpackage

and see if your problem solved.

If you want to see what commands will be executed with this fixpackage script , then you can open it with

~$ gedit fixpackage

Thanks

The message

"The following packages have been kept back: libeet1"

is NOT an issue, but just some information.

It is NOT a problem....

Anyway, you can still try this:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install aptitude
sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude full-upgrade

But I would not waste time on this, if I were you.

The message about libeet1 will not prevent installing or upgrading other packages.

Libeet1 seems from E17:
 sudo apt-cache rdepends libeet1
libeet1
Reverse Depends:
  libqedje0a
  libevas1
  libelementary-svn-09
  libeina1
  libefreet1
  libeet-dev
  libeet-dbg
  libeet-bin
  libedje1
  libedje-bin
  enna
  e17

Depends: libc6 (>= 2.11), libeina1 (>= 1.0.0~beta), libgcrypt11 (>= 1.4.5), libgnutls26 (>= 2.12.6.1-0), libjpeg8 (>= 8c), zlib1g (>= 1:1.1.4)

Seems not to be a ppa-problem.
Filename: pool/universe/e/eet/libeet1_1.4.0-2.1build1_i386.deb

Want to solve this problem because owner lives abroad and has no experience with CLI/
Will try one of the suggestions given above or apt-get install libeet1=1.2.2+svn41533-maemo1
(see http://talk.maemo.org/archive/index.php/t-69257.html)
ANy suggestions?

Considering that now only one package (libeet1) can NOT be upgraded and that the owner is taking her netbook back abroad, so I have little time, and that
aptitude full-upgrade (see answer 7), .."Like safe-upgrade, will attempt to upgrade packages, but it is more aggressive about solving dependency problems: it will install and remove packages until all dependencies are satisfied. Because of the nature of this command, it is possible that it will do undesirable things, and so you should be careful when using it."
and fixpackag ( answer 6)
(#!/bin/bash
sudo cp -arf /var/lib/dpkg /var/lib/dpkg.backup
sudo cp /var/lib/dpkg/status-old /var/lib/dpkg/status
sudo cp /var/lib/dpkg/available-old /var/lib/dpkg/available
sudo rm -rf /var/lib/dpkg/updates/*
sudo rm -rf /var/lib/apt/lists
sudo mkdir /var/lib/apt/lists
sudo mkdir /var/lib/apt/lists/partial
sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get update
sudo dpkg --clear-avail
sudo dpkg --configure -a
sudo apt-get install -f
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade)
both seem to risky. I will try to solve the problem later.By your help I know now what the problem is and which solutions are available
Thanks for your help.

Forgot to mention that answer 1:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PackageManagerTroubleshootingProcedure
is simular to fixpackage ( answer 6) except that more commands are executed.

Answer 11 might also be considered.
