Dear Launchpad,
[Note: I am in agreement with the code of conduct and I will get the key and sign it asap.]
That being said I have experienced a few problems recently again with my Toshiba with only 1/2gig RAM (I intend to go up to 2gig soon) and my Oneiric Ocelot "build," (IE., I accept every update that update-manager tells me to, without any notion of its need or suitability to my purposes, alas. Thus I am sort of an example of a "dumb consumer" of Ubuntu.) and here is a description of some of the recent changes and events.
I have lost connectivity to the internet- the indicator suggests that I am connected, but there is no connection to Ubuntu, Canonical or any other part of the web. I am using the Firefox 13 browser.
[Have read latest security notices now and see there are a variety of issues. My first will be regaining connectivity.]
This happened after a few events, more or less in the following order:
I turned on the ufw but did not configure it, so whatever the default or state it was in is what there is. (Since starting with Ubuntu on this computer, I have not had ufw until this. I turned it on because I thought I should and hadn't previously because I wasn't sure how to do it.) I tried the gufw, thinking it might be a better choice for me, but it appeared unresponsive and I removed it. (Is the firewall blocking connectivity? It did not do so at first, so maybe that's not the problem.)
I connected through wi-fi at a cafe and received a warning that the connection was not advisable, but I went through with connecting with them anyway. I cannot much remember and did not record the explanation exactly but there was something about, "the connection is a business/private server and is not recommended." This message was accompanied by an "i" icon. I connected at this same cafe later in the day. (on a previous occasion at another site, I received a stronger warning than that and heeded it, but in this instance it didn't sound so critical and I ignored it.)
I inserted a flash drive with many files backed-up from a Windows computer that had developed problems and transfered some of them to "home". (THIS may be part or all of the problem? - I can delete those files, but I don't know if that would help.)
I downloaded clamav, and have ran a scan, which said there was no infection, but I cannot tell if it was based on the most recent list, and I cannot tell if freshclam has been able to or successfully update. (I suspect that clamav may be overloading the 1/2gig RAM on connection with the internet or is not working with the ufw- perhaps the ufw is blocking freshclam and all that is shutting everything else down? I don't know.)
Then I had the experience on two occasions (once at the "bad connection cafe" and another non-warning public wi-fi spot) that update-manager was not working properly- or that the packages were not actually being received. Those were updates of So it looks like the updates occurred, it says that they happened successfully, but the message I received and recorded on the second occasion was this:

So, I have no idea what it all means, but obviously...something wicked this way comes...(sorry- couldn't resist that, really) and now I am unable to connect properly. And I have just noticed that I am having trouble with the file system- files disappearing when I move them- I can find them if I search, but I have to remember what they are called. (Which may not at all be related.)
(Is there a command for "show all files/folders"?)
I also have not been using Ubuntu One- perhaps I should start, but perhaps I cannot right now? Could back-up with a flash drive. I have a drive with mixed Windows and Ubuntu files- any problem there? Does anyone know if I can get a drive scanned remotely by a reputable company- Symantec or Kaspersky, say?
What to do? I have the following ideas:
1.) Upgrade the RAM
2.) Turn off ufw, especially if it is blocking freshclam.
3.) Disable or remove clamav.
4.) Delete any questionable downloaded files
Other than that, I am not sure what to try and am open to any suggestions and am awaiting your reply.
Remember that I may connect to a wi-fi source, (IE., it says I am connected) but I am not really experiencing connection.
Thank you.
