update manager wont open or do anything

Try using apt-get from the command line.
% sudo apt-get update
Then attempt to use update manager.

i tried it and this is what happened...

troyadmin@troy-K53E:~$ %sudo apt-get update
bash: fg: %sudo: no such job

remove that % symbol in the command ,
command is only
sudo apt-get update

ok do this

sudo rm -rf /var/lib/apt/lists/*
sudo apt-get update

do them one by one

i followed what you said and at the end of everything this is what happened

E: Encountered a section with no Package: header
E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/extras.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_natty_main_binary-amd64_Packages
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.

That actually worked. copy paste error.
so thanks guys for your help :)

hi............... unfortunately I have leaving ubuntu . its way I have install ubuntu8.10 but after i install it . necessary codec could not be install. I try a lot but it no response?

please send me necessary tipps , how I install suitable codec for ubuntu8.10 or orther installations to my Email.

Ubuntu 8.10 is not more supported please install Ubuntu 10.04.3 or Ubuntu 11.04

then please made your own question instead of append additional question on other users questions
