Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

it looks like this is a problem with my recent upgrade to lucid. i saw some other people with similar problems, but even reading through their threads i wasn't sure how i should proceed. any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks.

Jaunty is no longer supported in any way you can think of. It is end of life (EOL). There is no support here and all the Jaunty servers are abandoned

I suggest you upgrade to at least Lucid for continued support. Personally I would ensure your backups are recent and clean install Natty. If you want to upgrade (rather than clean install) then this guide will help:

Actually, I've already upgraded to Lucid. That's when this issue came up. Is there something I can do that doesn't require me to slick the laptop and restart from scratch?

Open a terminal: ctrl+alt+t
Verify OS version:
lsb_release -rd

Clean up /etc/apt/sources.list, which means remove all strings incl. 'jaunty'.
Afterwards update package list.
sudo apt-get update

Open a terminal by pressing ctrl+alt+t and then type:

gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

modify your repository sources list and then retry to update your system

After fixing

/etc/apt/sources.list

to get rid of the old jaunty references. I did so the:

sudo apt-get update

But, then I got 404s on fetches for:

E: Unable to fetch some archives, maybe run apt-get update or try with --fix-missing?

So, following the brilliant advice, I also needed to to do:

sudo apt-get upgrade --fix-missing

Then it worked like a champ.

I am not sure update-manager will fix this.
