Ok, run this again but attach the whole output file here. The code is preserved better that way.
apt-cache policy libdrm-nouveau1 libdrm-
The output file will be on your desktop after running the command.

You seem to have several ppa's activated via entries in the /etc/apt/
Please execute the command
ls -l /etc/apt/
in a terminal and copy/paste all output into a new message if this question thread.

OK. You have some ppas enabled that make trouble (ubuntu-xswat does not exist, xorg-edgers seems to be selected in the version for lucid). I would recommend to delete all those ppa's. If you need them later you can enable them again with "add-apt-repository ppa:user/ppa-name".
Open a terminal and issue the following commands:
sudo rm /etc/apt/
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
then select all output and copy/paste it into a new message of this question thread.

There are nonstandard files listed in one of the directories used by the package management programs.
Did you try to make backups of the configuration files by zipping them?
Please execute the command
ls -l /etc/apt/

My system shows similar files as you have, but all of them without the .gz suffix.
To be honest, I do not have a clue why you have that suffix.
Do you remember any event ore action where that might come from?

It does not really matter by whom and why these files have been created, the required step is to get the problem solved.
I assume that replacing the .gz files by their unzipped equivalent does the trick.
I recommend to do some testing for the contents of the files as next step.
Please issue the following commands in a terminal and then copy/paste all output as done before:
zcat /etc/apt/
zcat /etc/apt/
cat /etc/apt/
gzip -l /etc/apt/
gzip -l /etc/apt/

The two .gz files taken as sample contain the correct apt.conf contents, so I assume also the other ones will.
To unzip the files the commands most probably will have to be
cd /etc/apt/
sudo gunzip -v *.gz
Please execute the commands and copy/paste the output as before.

That the apt-get update does not show more than these two lines indeed is a bit strange.
The error might be in the sources.list.

More or less what I expected - somehow your sources.list file got also deleted during the repair attempts.
In your bug 797673 you have uploaded it a few days ago and you just need to re-download the file.
Download https:/
sudo mv ~/Download/
(you have to adapt that command a bit if your download directory has a different name).
And then try
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
again.

The warnings with the keyrings are a bit strange. Although they are warnings only, I think it would be worth trying to get them resolved befor proceeding.
Try the following commands
ls -la /etc/apt/
ls -la /etc/apt/
sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.
sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.
sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.
ls -la /etc/apt/
and then again
sudo apt-get update

I'm back... was trying to upgrade to 11.0.4 via the GUI, but i'm still receiving an error:
"Authenticating the upgrade failed. There may be a problem with the network or with the server. "

The output of apt-get upgrade shows that the package management process seems to work again.
The upgrade just installed a new version of the kernel, so you should reboot if you haven't done already.
I have never seen the message "Authenticating the upgrade failed...", but a Google search comes up with the recommendation to issue the command "gpg" without any parameters in a terminal (wait until it asks for further input and press ctrl-C then), and/or to start update-manager, go to settings, switch to the tab authentication and press 'Restore Defaults'.
You could also try to do the release upgrade from a terminal with the command
sudo do-release-upgrade
It should then be easier to copy error messages.

I think we are not on the same page. After the apt-get upgrade. I reboot the device. The reboot was not straight forward, i had to manually force reboot the device since that the Ubuntu couldn't complete the shutdown process. Then i tried to do the release upgrade with no success.
Now i tried the manual command: sudo do-release-upgrade but as before the process stopped at the "Calculating the changes".
I guess we are in square one, this is where it all started.

Two ideas for next steps:
There was a frequent problem when upgrading from lucid to maverick with the package xserver-
If you start synaptic package management you can select in the bottom left corner 'Source' and then you will see in the top left corner from which source you have installed the packages. Look for any package that is installed from a ppa (if any) or that is marked 'Local'. Also removing these packages (or replacing them by the version from the standard sources) is worth trying.

Hello,
Had hard time to follow your instructions, there is no "Source" button on my synaptic window. Anyway... I removed completely thexserver-
I have uploaded the output of main.log and apt.log to: http://
I didn't reboot my machine, and I'm not sure if the display will work correctly after the boot... should I reinstall the video paks?

Just to explain my current idea how to proceed:
Apparently there is a package (or more specifically a combination of packages) that the upgrade handler does not know how to resolve. In most cases reducing the number of packages by deinstalling some of them sooner or later does the trick. The biggest problem is to find out the package(s) that have to be removed for the upgrade to succeed.
You need not be frightened because of the video drivers, I am sure your display will work correctly after a reboot.
The package name xserver-
What graphics card do you have installed in your system? You might think of removing all video driver packages except the one you are currently using ("sudo lshw -C display" will show your video hardware).
For Synaptic: The button I was referring to is called 'Origin' (not Source, sorry for my error), see https:/
I have checked the ouput of the failed attempt and it seems to me that the package libgl1-mesa-dri comes from the xorg-edgers ppa, and even seems to be built for lucid, not for maverick.
The 'Important notice' on https:/
"*IMPORTANT NOTICE* - If you are upgrading from one release to another and are using this PPA, be sure to install ppa-purge and use it to downgrade all of this PPA's packages before the upgrade or you will have a broken system." So this is a candidate for being the culprit.
I am not sure if other important packages depend on libgl1-mesa-dri, you could check what would be removed with the command
apt-get --simulate remove libgl1-mesa-dri

NOTE: This is only a simulation!
apt-get needs root privileges for real execution.
Keep also in mind that locking is deactivated,
so don't depend on the relevance to the real current situation!

ok, remove libgl1-mesa-dri and try the upgrade again.
sudo apt-get remove libgl1-mesa-dri
sudo do-release-upgrade
Have you checked Synaptic if it shows other packages form ppa's?

Thank you very much,

Congratulations!
Out of curiosity (and to help others who might run into the same problem):
was removing libgl1-mesa-dri sufficient or did you remove other packages as well?

Yes, once I removed it the insulation worked.

It seems that you want to tell that the attempt to upgrade from 11.04 to 11.10 fails with "E:Error, pkgProblemResol
