I suggest you use software centre and disable any 3rd party PPAs you have added. This can help. Can you give the output of:
sudo do-release-upgrade
Thanks

This can be a duplicate of bug 721306 and bug 658458 (and a dozen similar ones)
If the package xserver-
"Could not determine the upgrade

Several persons have reported that after removal of that package the upgrade was successful.
Try this workaround: Open a terminal and enter the command:
sudo apt-get remove xserver-
and try the upgrade again.

I was unable to upgrade after I turned of 3rd party PPA as was suggested, but I retried by turning off/ deselecting every thing in all the tabs. This worked. I then updated to 10.11succesfuly. Not sure why but when I turned off the 3rd party PPA only it would not upgrade. I know buy reading the boards that this was a common problem, so I just went a little further and deselected everything.
Thank you for your help as I am a newbie and get lost easily:)

Please mark as solved if it is so. You may want to post your findings on the boards you found where people were having the same issue :)
