Update - Could not download all repository indexes

Asked by Mark Hopkins

I am unable to update using update manager. I went through a period when I had no internet so I knew it could not update, then got a secure wireless link and the update manager no longer worked. From the message, i sounded like the speed was too slow, so I connected next to the router and same message. Are the repositories for 9.10 no longer available? I tried to upgrade, but i was told to check my internet connection, it works fine even for some video streaming so i don;t know where to start.

Error message I get when trying to upgrade is:
Could not download all repository indexes

The repository may no longer be available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your network connection and ensure the repository address in the preferences is correct.

Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

I tried going into settings and choose a download server and hit the select best server button, this was the error message I got.
No suitable download server was found
Please check your Internet connection.

My internet connection works, I am using it to ask this question.

I am not very well versed in Linux, so if someone could help me, it be very much appreciated

Thanks, Mark

Can you access http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ on your web browser? Instead of the update manager, try "sudo apt-get update" in the terminal. Also, manually select a close mirror in synaptic rather than having it try to find one automatically.

FYI, support for 9.10 ends on April 30.

I can access http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ on my web browser, it gives me an ftp directory and i can move around through it.

I have tried to use main sever, us server, close mirror servers, nothing works.

I tried "sudo apt-get update" in the terminal. This is the error I received, similar to when I try the update manager:

It seems like the update manager no longer sees my internet connection.

I know the support is finishing this month, that is why i want to get this working so i can upgrade to a newer supported version without have to restart the procedure from scratch with a CD.

Please let me know what to do next,

Thanks, Mark

It seems that your package management processes try to use a proxy that no longer exists. (With all addresses the same message about 198.104.156.229:80 shows up!)

Please check your ~/.bashrc for entries like "export http_proxy=***"
and /etc/atp/apt.conf for an entry like "Acquire::http::Proxy ***"

Are you using a proxy in your browser?

The "no route to host" suggests a network issue of some sort. A quick google for "113: No route to host" shows people with a similar issue due to the network using a proxy. Which would explain how the browser would work but apt-get not.

The suggested solution is to set up the proxy for apt see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/AptGet/Howto#Setting%20up%20apt-get%20to%20use%20a%20http-proxy

Manfred: I tried the commands in the terminal, but I am a newbie at Linux and could not get it to work, Please let me know what the full command should be. I either got access denied, or if a prepended with sudo it did not understand the command.

Joe: Same problem with your answer. It sounds very likely that I am using a proxy in my connection, the network setting in Firefox does say use system proxy settings. How do I find out what the password and address etc. for the proxy settings are and how exactly do I make the changes? Probably the network settings on my connections did not use a proxy which is why it worked in the past.

Thanks, Mark

To change the proxy settings go to System -> Preferences -> Network Proxy.

Tried that, presently set Network Proxy Preferences to Automatic proxy configuration and used the apply system-wide button. It doesn't help. Tried the Manual Proxy Configuration with the defaults that are there, applied System-wide and lost internet connectivity with Firefox. Reset back to automatic and applied system-wide and Firefox and Skype work again, but still not Update Manager.

Any other ideas out there?

Thanks to your help you put me on the right track. Now everything works

I went back to the network proxy preferences and selected internet connection. The internet continued to work, but the repositories were still unavailable. I went back and hit reset and restarted the computer and when I went back to the update manager...Eureka... it was working. I guess the previous internet connections I was using were using a proxy and this one doesn't.

Thanks to the responses that put me on the right track, now I can upgrade safely to the latest version.

Sorry for the delay in answering, In Network proxy under System - Preferences,
I simply changed the selection to the first option, no proxy or direct
connection. Then I clicked on the apply system-wide button. I may have have
tried the reset too, don't really remember.

Hope that works for you too.
