Sorry had to take wife to the shops. I copied your instructions to
terminal but cannot find a way to paste it to you {newbie}

you copy and paste by dragging the mouse over the output, to into the browser, then right click to paste, or if you have a middle button, just click that button.

however, it sounds like you have the problem others have. open software center then uncheck the box that lists CD/DVD as a software source and see if that solves your problem.

Can you please click on your screen in the top left corner on Applications - System - Software Sources
This should open a program window
When you are asked for your password please enter it. (In case you do not know your password any more please tell us, we can help also with that.)
In the program windows you will see several tabs.
Please go through all tabs and deselect (unmark) all lines that say something about CD/DVD, especially all lines that have Dapper or Gutsy in themselves.
Then close that program window.

Then click on your screen in the top left corner on Applications - System - Update manager
This should open a program window
Click on the button to check for new updates and wait for the new information to get downloaded
Click on the other button to install all available updates.

If there are any problems or error messages in that process, please give the steps that you have done and the error message that are shown as exact as possible.

I,m sorry but i was hoping you had my history of what I had done.I have
been in the middle of a film, when the sound keeps repeating itself and
the picture is still and the cursor i cannot move.I,m downloading update
same thing.I had a icon telling me I needed Gutsy.I down loaded from my
windows system. In terminal I updated which asked for Dapper and
Gutsy. The latist was what you suggested.I was in the middle of gettin
information off the web when, the screen stops moving and the cursor will
not move.I,m not sure what other information to give you.

https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/update-manager/+question/144047 shows the full history of your problem, but the _current_ status of your computer is not fully clear to me. From your two recent messages I see that some kind of 'freeze' appeared again. I am willing to provide you with support, but I have to ask for your cooperation, that it really works.

First of all it is necessary for any supporter to know some details of your system. Can you please execute the action that was already asked on Feb 4th in the very first answer to your question, namely open a terminal window (by pressing CTRL+ALT+T), and enter the command

uname -a; lsb_release -a; echo; sudo apt-get update

You do that preferably by copy and paste to prevent potential typo errors.
That command will ask for your password, please enter it when asked (you will not see anything when you type it).

Then please copy the complete output from your terminal window and paste it as a new message in this question thread.
If you answer to messages like this by e-mail please reply without history, because it makes work easier for supporters who use https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/update-manager/+question/144047 for their work.

@Norman
You posted without saying anything. Is your intention to indicate that you just did what actionparsnip said to do, but the problem is not fixed?

No problem.

So, were you reopening the question to indicate that it wasn't fixed? Or that it was fixed? Or that you were still waiting to see if it was fixed?

(If you're still waiting on whether or not it's fixed, you can just leave this question as it is while waiting, as now its status is Needs Information, which accurately describes that condition. If you want to add a comment without changing the status of the question, you can come to https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/update-manager/+question/144047, type your message into the box, and click "Just Add a Comment".)

You seem to have very serious problems with your Ubuntu system. We can try to fix them--please let me know if you want to do that--but perhaps you'd be better off backing up all your documents and other important files (e.g., music, videos), wiping the disk, and reinstalling Ubuntu. (For example, you could try doing a fresh install of Natty.)

Before doing that, I recommend you test your RAM (select memtest86+ from the boot menu--if you don't see a boot menu, hold down shift when booting) and hard drive (boot from the live CD and use these instructions: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Smartmontools).

Is that to say that you do not currently have backups, even of your important documents?

If that is the case, then I'd say it's especially important to start by making backups of those documents, since the problems you're experiencing might be due to hardware problems. If your computer stops turning on sometime soon, you'll be glad to have backups.

this twice, the first time the computer just shut down.I thank you for
all your help and patience.I have not tried a film yet.I like the look
of Natty.I,m not sure how to get into update manager, terminal or games
because there is nothing to click on,it do not fit in the screen. When I
have watched a dvd I will let you know. Thanks again Norman

Is everything working now in Natty? Are you able to watch DVD video? Did you figure out how to run all your programs OK?

Hi Eliah, well I have just finished watching a dvd. It took quite a while
before I had Natty working. What I did not know was the upgrade was not
complete. I watched a dvd on VLC, the film stopped but it did not freeze
so I decided to completely remove VLC,and I think that done the trick.
I,m enjoying Natty.I had a error when I was updating, which said it
could not remove something but everything is working so I will wait till
I see if it occurs again. Thanks again for all your help Norman

Did the error recur, or is everything good now?

Hi Eliah,Whew what a time I have been having.I went on holiday in June
to St Helena, an island in the south atlantic. Now the fun starts. My
sound had stop working on the windows of my system,so I took computor
back to where I bought it.After two weeks they said they had fixed
it ,but had lost my Ubuntu and could not fix it,they did not charge me.I
had it fixed by these geeks which cost a fortune.I am now back, but the
problem now is when i,m updating it cannot complete i get an error
ttf-mscorefonts-installer.Do I report it to who. regards norman

Dear Norman,

sorry to hear that you have problems with your ubuntu system again.

Your current issue seems to be independent from the old one (it seems not to be about freezing, and the CD issue should meanwhile be solved). This is why I think you should start a new question document by using this address https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/update-manager/+addquestion

As your problem is related to the update process not working as it should, please execute the instructions as given in
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PackageManagerTroubleshootingProcedure and post all output in that new question document.

One more remark to the question/answer functionality in Launchpad:
You can see the complete history with all answers on the answers.launchpad.net web pages, e.g. https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/update-manager/+question/144047 for this one, where new information can be added, and where the supporters provide their answers. You get an e-mail about each modification, and you can also reply on such e-mail to provide new information.
If you use the function to replay by e-mail please make sure that you remove all original text from the e-mail response, because leaving the previous e-mail text in the new one makes reading the question thread on launchpad more cumbersome.
