Ubuntu 10.4 wont upgrade to 10.10

Asked by Patrick Wilson

I am running 10.04 (Desktop) on my pc and have applied all updates through update manager and made sure that 'Normal Releases' is selected under the Release Upgrade drop down box yet Update Manager says there are no new updates or upgrades to apply - I thought I could upgrade to 10.10 so I dont know why I am not being given the option?
Thanks for any advice
Patrick

sudo apt-get install update-manager-core

Then run:

gksudo gedit /etc/update-manager/release-upgrades

Change:
Prompt=lts
to:
Prompt=normal

Save the new file, close gedit and run:
sudo do-release-upgrade

Should do it

Thanks for the quick response, still have a problem however, after running 'suso do-release-upgrade' I get the following

Could not determine the upgrade

An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade:
E:Error, pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks, this may be
caused by held packages.

This can be caused by:
* Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu

If none of this applies, then please report this bug against the
'update-manager' package and include the files in
/var/log/dist-upgrade/ in the bug report.

not sure if I have unofficial packages installed - dont think so, only had it running a few weeks and havent really installed anything....

My dad had a problem with this. The problem can be rectified by running:

update-manager -d

in a terminal. However, I do not know if this will try to upgrade the computer to natty alpha 1.

If upon trying to upgrade, you get a message about it being a Release Candidate, you're probably alright, but this won't work if you start getting messages about 11.04, natty, alpha-1 etc

I hope this helps.

ok you have the 'ubuntu-desktop' package which is needed.

Maybe someone else can contribute

This can be a duplicate of one of these: bug 663158, bug 658458 and bug 658581

If the package xserver-xorg-video-nouveau is installed, in several cases the 10.04 to 10.10 upgrade fails with the error message
"Could not determine the upgrade
An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade:
E:Error, pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks, this may be caused by held packages.
This can be caused by:
* Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu"

Several persons have reported that after removal of that package the upgrade was successful.

It's part of a default install, you are free to remove it as you wish
