Getting error message that begins with this E: Malformed line 54 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list (dist parse)

Asked by Patrick Jones

New to Linux after botched reformatting of Vista powered machine. Trying to install things such as Adobe Reader, WINE etc. and getting various error messages that contain the following:

E: Malformed line 54 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list (dist parse)

is this a problem with my installation - from a CD I created before I cleared the hard drive - or is it something repairable by me?

Not related to your question but if you are new to Ubuntu, i recommend reading through the Ubuntu 10.04 Manual, it's very informative: http://ubuntu-manual.org/ Click on the "download Button" to download the latest PDF version.

That's why then.

Run:

gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

find the line:
deb http://archive.canonical.com/lucid partner

and change it to:
deb http://archive.canonical.com/ lucid partner

Note the space before the word lucid which you have removed or mistyped. Save the file then run:

sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get -y upgrade

Should be ok.

hello
Just a couple of days ago we bought an Apple MacBook Pro MC024LL/Afrom !
this website www.Xmas-carnival.com <http://www.xmas-carnival.com/>
It is indeed a fantastic machine, though it will take some time to get used
to the new system. Wireles mouse and keyboard. Nice design.
and I love it. I paid $1260US all charges included the chose to use the
Core 2 Duo but that's not all bad. This is a stable, cool running, capable
processor. I use this mostly for work where stability, battery life,
portability, and longevity are the most important things to me. I rarely
play games. I especially like the backlit keyboard. if you want to get
one.you can check it out .

Happy New Year to you as well.

hope you had a happy holiday....

Regards,

Patrick Jones
