10.04 Upgrade from 9.10 Hanging...

Asked by ROB3RT

Hi. I'm installing the Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Alpha 1 (64bit if it matters). It is currently stuck on the install phase. It is stuck at: "Preparing memtest86+" and I can't close out of the terminal (in the upgrade window), implying that it has frozen. Now, is it safe to exit out of the terminal that I am running the upgrade in? Or will that somehow break my system, because it is in the middle of installing? And, if how, how can I get it to un-freeze? I can also Force it to quit, but I'm not sure if that is safe or not.
Thanks to anybody that can help me out on this one.

I should also add that I setup Ubuntu using Wubi. I don't know if that makes a difference or not, but I just thought that I should add that.

Wubi is godawful and brings a whole host of complexity to the system. Like you cannot boot to a liveCD to resolve issues as it is simply a file on your NTFS partition

All I can suggest is that you close the terminal, open another and run: sudo apt-get -f install

to hopefully resume the upgrade.I am not sure how successful this will be but frozen system generally isnt a good thing.

The hanging problem has become very common and is because of using Wubi
because the windows file system sucks and thus the Ubuntu files stored
on windows get fragmented, which makes it hard for Ubuntu to access all
the stuff in real-time making the system hang. Try actionparsnip's
solution and let's hope it works
