Blank desktop background, no menu bar

Asked by Siddhrao

I'm running a dual boot with Precise and Windows 7, and am completely new to working through a terminal, and barely grasp how it works.

After I installed a driver for the integrated wireless adapter on my laptop, i rebooted, and then a window popped up saying that Compiz failed or something, following which I only had a blank desktop background. On rebooting, after I log in, I just get the same blank desktop background, and I am only able to access applications by creating a folder (which somehow shows on the desktop) and then opening them from the file browser.

Is there any way I can get it to look like a normal desktop?

I'm fairly confident that the question below is relevant, but I have no idea how to follow the directions to rectify it

I'm sorry for my ignorance, I tried unity 2d and it worked fine, thanks a lot!
is there any way I'd be able to use Ubuntu 3D again? also, are there any advantages to doing so?
