Start up problems with 11.10

Asked by Rob Fellows

After password entry, I'm left with a purple ubuntu screen with no toolbar or side bar. With no other option I have to force the system to shut down (hold down power button for several secs) then during a new startup, force a shutdown during this startup before I get to the password screen. This then allows me to try a further start which presents the grub screen allowing various options, choosing the recovery mode allows a normal start. However, this doesn't mean that the next start is ok, just a further power up, power down, power up to enable 11.10 to run.

If you start up normally (not with recovery mode), and on the login screen click the gear icon and click Ubuntu 2D, do you get a working desktop?

Thank you for your swift reply.

Yes.

I have tried your suggestion & it works perfectly, I have logged in &
out & shutdown & restarted four times in different modes since to check
everything and all is now working perfectly - many thanks.

Ubuntu 2D uses Unity 2D. If you want Unity (with "3D" graphics acceleration) to work, the next diagnostic step would be for you to produce the problem (logging in with "Ubuntu" and not "Ubuntu 2D" as the session type), open a Terminal window (Ctrl+Alt+T), and run the command "unity --replace" (without the quotes). If that doesn't work, then (making sure you have a $ _ prompt to run this next command...you might have to open a new tab in the Terminal), run "unity --reset". If that doesn't work, try "compiz --replace". If you can't open a Terminal window at all, then you can try running these commands in a virtual console instead (Ctrl+Alt+F1 to switch to the first virtual console, and Alt+F7 or, occasionally, Alt+F8, to switch back to the GUI).

Thanks for your new post, I guess what you're saying is that 3D option
had come up as my start up default option (however achieved), but as I
don't need this I will stick with unity 2D. You have probably delved
deeper into this than I needed but it is heartwarming to know that there
are people out there in the Ubuntu community ready to help others with
problems.

As before, many thanks

I'm glad the workaround of selecting Ubuntu 2D is sufficient to your needs. If in the future you decide you want to work more on this problem, please feel free to reopen this question (or keep this Solved, and post a new one).
