nothing on the desktop on netbook 10.10?

am i not supposed to be able to put files/things on my desktop on ubunto 10.10 netbook edition?

The netbook version uses a desktop environment known as "unity". Unity does not support desktop icons or files by design.

Apparently, however, you can place a folder in the left hand bar:

I am still looking for the file changes... so it might be possible to make the icons available at boot.
