when i made login to 12.04 with usual user i get terminal, but works with guest account
Hi - I successfully loaded 12.04 and it worked fine for a couple of days but now when I log in the screen takes me to a black page with the command line - loging in as a guest does not have this problem. I cannot work out how to close this black page that is very similar to the terminal but there is no tab at the top to close it. Thanks Jonnie

Hi Jeet - afraid this does not appear to do anything. Ubuntu loads normally right up to the moment I press enter having put my password in. What happens next is a black square opens in the top left corner and I get the command line jj@jj-laptop:~$ (nothing else on the screen works)
having read about some of the unix commands I tried exec login and this takes me back to the Ubuntu login screen and I can then login as a guest (but cannot access any of my folders)
Any more ideas - can I login from the command prompt? Thanks. Jonnie

Hey Jeet - I am still playing - have just tried sudo login and was able to login in the command screen and that's it. I have tried ctrl+alt+F7 and this now takes me out of the terminal but back to the guest account - very frustrating. Any ideas. Jonnie

Hi Jeet
Having logged into the guest account I when to shell (terminal) and typed in
cat /etc/passwd
and the response was

I then typed
id <user name> (the only user name I know is jj)
and the response was

I then typed in
who am i
and the response was

guest-YujfXm@
finally I typed
echo $EUID
and the response was

guest-YujfXm@
Does this give you any more info?
The problem remains - I have full functionality from the guest login (but no access to my files and folders), when I login to my account (jj) the moment I hit return I get a black screen and the command prompt
If I type CNTRL+ALT+F7 from the guest account this takes me to a shell that prompts me to login which I can do successfully but that is all (I cannot get out of shell) CNTRL+ALT+F7 just takes me back to the guest account.
I have not tried sudo apt-get install gnome-shell yet - where should I do this from? the guest account or my account? does it matter. Thanks I really appreciate your help Jonnie

Hey Jeet - further to my last I have now run 'sudo apt-get install gnome-shell' from the shell page I get when I login and it ran a software download then when I logged in it asked for a restart - this I have done but no change to the problem. I still can't get to the Ubuntu window from my login.
Thanks Jonnie

Have you tried switching to the Unity 2D option while you are in the login screen? (press the Ubuntu button to the right of the password prompt). Was the original install a clean install or an upgrade? If an upgrade, you might want to create a new adninistrator account, move all your data into that if it works OK and delete your old account as the problem is being caused by a configuration file you have in yout home folder. Could take a lot of finding!

Hi Barry - this install was an upgrade.
The 2D option works !!! your are brilliant - but I have just had an error message saying that there is an internal problem with Ubuntu. So I think I will create a new administrator account. Can you advise on how I do that?
Thanks so much it is a great relief to to see all my files again - I am in the middle of a degree course!!!!

System settings->accounts then unlock with your password and use the + icon to add an account. Make sure that account has all the privileges - administrator and everything else you could need. Test the new account to make sure there are no more error messages before going any further. If you still get random error messages, something went wrong with your upgrade. We can help you try to fix it, or you might want to do a clean install. Either way, make sure you have backed up any data you want to save.

Hi Jonnie sorry for late reply ...
as Barry suggested you are able to work with 2D option ..
now you can do some trick to enable root and add accounts and access data ..
i must say that you backup your important data first ..
to enable root.
in terminal enter following command .
sudo passwd root
then copy paste below in terminal
sudo sh -c 'echo "greeter-
now restart and enjoy you can use root account.
for adding user you can go threw following ...
sudo useradd -p <user_name> <password>
after doing this you can open user management tool using
users-admin command and change user type to administrator...
more things related to user management can be available on
https:/
Thanks
Jeet
