After starting the “ON”
button of my computer, the first page indicate me to choose (3 options):

1 - Ubuntu or

2 - Other system (I
have not any other system)

3- Win XP

If I did not choose any
option, the computer will go to Ubuntu and starts

If I choose Win XP,
the computer starts on Win XP. Now, the problem is so: Ubuntu does not start.

Can you explain me how to try the boot
option: nomodeset

Thanks

To try boot options, highlight the Ubuntu boot item and press 'e' for edit. Scroll down to the line that starts with 'linux' and ends with some other boot options like 'quite' and 'splash'. Add nomodeset at the end of this line (it might be wrapped around). You can then press <F10> to boot with the changed options.

Other options you can try are acpi=off and nolapic

Dear Chris
Thanks for your help
I can’t realize your proposed procedure. I added at the end of the suggested line nomodeset. Ubuntu ignores this add and always keeps the unique choice “quiet”. It is the same with acpi=off and nolapic

The change to the boot option in grub is only temporary, to see if it will allow you to boot. Just add the option to the end of the line as indicated. If the system still does not boot when you changed the boot options, then the problem is elsewhere.

Can you boot Ubuntu off the liveCD?

No I can't boot. the system still does not boot. may be, the best solution is to format and to reinstall the OS after a back up. D. BERKANI

Yes, it can be faster to do a re-install sometimes than to try to repair the file system. You may have a
wubi install, which is where you install Ubuntu into Windows. The procedure would be to uninstaall Ubuntu from Windows and re-install if this is the case. Data recovery is a bit more problematic however, as the Wubi install uses a virtual disk for the Ubuntu install.
