why doesn't the system monitor show the change in memory

Asked by Lynne Stevens

I made the jump from 3 gig DDR2 of ram to 4 gig DDR2 of ram and the system Monitor still has me with 3 gig DDR2 of ram
CMOS says it has all 4 gig of DDR2 ram but it shows the 256 megs for video and the base of 635 megs and extended memory of 3856 megs . .
Those numbers were 1 gig less before . . like the 3856 was 2856 . . Laptop knows the difference why doesn't Ubuntu system Monitor ? Says System Memory 2.2 gigs and swap is 3.8 gigs ( but that swap was set up when it was installed so I do not expect it to change but the 2.2 should have jumped to 3.2 right . .

you missed:

uname -a

You don't need to become root either, users can run those commands, otherwise I would have added sudo where needed.

Well you are running a 32bit OS which has a max RAM of 3.2Gb RAM which probably your issue.

You are also running Maverick. Maverick is no longer supported after the end of next month. I suggest you grab the 64Bit ISO for Precise and install that. You will see all the RAM as the maximum ram for 64Bit OS is 4Eb. You will also have the latest release and 5 years of support.

*I do not like the floating ICONS **and how long it takes to find things !
A friend upgraded and to find a program takes a lot longer than in the
basic Gnome look with its menu at the top of the screen . . Then there
is the fun of showing a 80 year old man where the menu is . . He does
not like it either and wants to go back to 10.10 . . When are they going
back to the basic look nice and clean easy to find things ?
Me until they do that I am staying at 10.10 . . Can't see the 4 gig of
ram ? Strange XP with SP3 added seen 4 gig of ram and it was an older
like Pentium 4 3.2 gigahertz CPU So Linux can't see past the 3.2 gig
? WHY ? Oh yeah it wa an OLD DESK top I had before the power surge got
it took out MB and Power supply
years ago . .

If you mean unity then not only do you not have to use it, the whole desktop can be easily tweaked but Unity is onlydefault in one of the FOUR official releases of Ubuntu.

http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2012/03/gnome-classic-in-ubuntu-12-04-its-like-nothing-ever-changed/

You could alternatively install the PAE kernel and access up to 64Gb in 32bit OS. Windows has this too so its not strange at all. Its very simple. The PAE kernel is available in the repos but Maverick is soon to die.

The whole "I hate Unity" has grown really boring now. There are so many guides online as well as the option of XFCE, KDE and even LXDE. XFCE looks and feels like Gnome2 as well.

Can you help with this problem?
