Printer Access Denied Ubuntu 12.04

Asked by Martyn Bell

Since replacing Windows XP with Ubuntu 12.04, I can no longer print from other PC's (using Wnds Vista & Wnds 7) to the network printer installed on my Ubuntu desktop PC. It will install onto the Windows PC's & print a test page, but from then on I get an access denied message. I have read lots of stuff on the web & tried various fixes without any success. I am new to Ubuntu, I have uninstalled & reinstalled Ubuntu 12.04 with no improvement. CUPS and SAMBA are installed. The printer is an HP-Deskjet-1050-J410-series connected by USB & installed using https://help.ubuntu.com/community/NetworkPrintingWithUbuntu. can anyone please help?

It can be a little tricky to set up but there is a good guide here:

Sorry actionparsnip

I apologize for my incompetence, the printer is an HP-Deskjet-1050-J410-series. It is connected to my desktop PC (running Ubuntu) by USB.

Thank you

Warren Hill, I will check out your link to the guide.

Thanks Warren

I have checked the guide and found that it is what I used to set up the printer.
I have read online that someone said don't use Samba, use CUPS instead, but as I am using different OS's on the network I need to use Samba. Windows has a problem & they say do not add the printer as a network printer, select add a local printer & create a new port, then add the computer name & printer name as the port.
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/troubleshoot-network-printer-problems I have tried this with no success.
I can see the Ubuntu printer on the network & it is now displaying the correct workgroup name.
I have also read something about having to add a password to Samba to access the network printer, I have not done this yet as I don't want a password.
Other OS's are Windows Vista & Windows 7

Hope this helps

Hi actionparsnip

I have found this which seems to be one of your previous help blogs, but relates to an earlier version of Ubuntu.
Could this possibly help me?
