Asked by Andrew Crome

I recently purchased an acer aspire one happy using the Intel Atom N570 (1.66GHZ) 1MB L2 cache 1 GB DDR3 Memory this unit uses both windows 7 starter and Android. I want to install ubuntu. I had this operating system on a Toshiba Portage' and was very impressed sadly the Toshiba went to pc heaven ! what I would like to know will the latest version of Ubuntu install and run on my acer ? Will horrible things happen and will the evil android be exterminated ?

Please help ?

Made the ubuntu install cd and test it on your pc, you can boot from live pc and play with Ubuntu without install it...
Then if you don't have big issue install it still sing the live cd...

To not waste time, be sure to have downloaded a perfect iso image, so be sure to check the md5sum of .iso before to burn it on a cd...

The best option to download the iso image is using .torrent protocol...

Hi Andrew , I don't see why not ! :)

Ubuntu no longer has a netbook specific spin - the full iso should detect the Atom processor on install.
Should run fine for your uses.

The only drawback could be the on-board video card for 3D and HD , am not sure of that.

as marcobra said , try it first from the live-cd , and see how things go .. you can even do an online test http://www.phoronix.com/

So to try /install ubuntu from the live CD

1st things first

make sure you md5 test the iso image before burning the iso , whichever release you choose to download

# See the md5 hashes https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuHashes

# follow the steps in the section " MD5SUM on Windows "

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM

if you prefer to burn the iso to a media CD , make sure to burn the iso with a slow speed .

Hi thanks for the reply

My acer does not have a CD drive so I ran ubuntu through an sd stick it seems to run ok however If I actually installed it what will happen with the stupid Android OS that is installed along side windows ? When I had a Toshiba portage and installed ubuntu windows was actually deleted and it ran brilliantly

Ubuntu will not delete either of the existing operating systems by default. It really depends what you want to have in the end. I've never tried an install in which two OS's were already there, but I think you might need to clear the partition that has Android on it before doing an install. Then it will offer you choices base on dual boot with Windows if that is what you want, or a clean install using the entire drive.

Thanks for your advice when I installed Ubuntu on my previous computer it was a clean install and used the entire drive and I had no problems
the original OS for that computer was windows vista my latest acquisition uses android and windows 7 starter so I'm in some what of a bind
I hate these OS's and really thought Ubuntu was the bees knees !

So , you want to dual boot Ubuntu with these OS's and you're concern about losing Android !

if so , Ubuntu uses GRUB2 and will detect any OS

# here is clue

http://www.webupd8.org/2012/03/how-to-dual-boot-android-x86-and-ubuntu.html

I can sense you might have another concern about the partitioning ! .. not a problem

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WindowsDualBoot

Salutation.

Andre, are you saying you want to keep one or both of the OS's or get rid entirely and do a clean install? The Ubuntu installer can do either or both.

For screensavers you have to install xscreensaver (dont really understand why they didnt include screensavers, but nvm) and configure it. I believe no one mentioned this yet so i might as well mention it now.----

If you are worried that something will get deleted off your hdd accidentally, you havent backed up your system :-) . There are plenty of ways to clone hdd's, for any os. I would recommend you keep an image of your system handy in case (hopefully not) you need to reinstall the entire thing.

I am not even sure if you installed the proper package !

I'd try the following .. when you see the black screen switch to a
text-console (tty) by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1 , then login with your user
name and password .

next , execute the command killall THE PACKAGE
to kill that running process .

after that press Ctrl+Alt+Backspace to restart X .

i would also check the ~/.sessions-errors file to see what cause the
session to get locked .
