Clean install of ubuntu 12.04 from CD gives unreadable flashing dialogue box

Asked by ucalagon

Dear Experts - Ubuntu 11.10 ran great on PC tower (AMD 2600+ 4GB 2 x 250GB HDD, one system, one data). Chose "Upgrade to 12.04 in Package Manager and chaos ever since! Half way through upgrade, system locked up with "irrecoverable error, will run desktop...".
Have tried clean install of both 11.10 (results in unreadable, flashing dialogue box after 10 mins) and clean install of 12.04, same result.
All help very welcome - David

Can you run the 'Try Ubunto' option when booting from the live-DVD and is this OK?

Be sure to have a perfect Ubuntu live install cd made from a md5sum verified iso image...
Then you can be sure to have a perfect cd: booting from the cd and then selecting verify media ...

Dear Barry, thanks for response. Tower was working fine with version 11.10.
Opted for Upgrade to 12.04 via Package Manager and chaos ever since! Have
tried the following. . .
Clear install of 11.10 from previous successful CD, gives "Installer has
encountered an unrecoverable error, desktop will now launch to. . ."
Tried reinstall with Try Unto option, installs OK but doesn't have any
"Shutdown/Quit" choice in Topmenu & won't mount HDD 2 (previous OK) because
of presence of ext/6 (You don't have permissions).
Tried Try Ubuntu options with new D/Ls of both 11 & 12, plus deleting all
partitions on both hdds, still returns ". . recoverable error "
Have run Windows Ultimate Boot CD to check drives not buggered and all
seems in order.
Thanks for continued support but how do I reformat drives in Try Ubuntu
please?
All help welcome! RH

To format a drive, you use gparted which is on the live-CD. If you want accurate information on the state of your hard drive, use the Disk Utility and run the SMART tests you will find available. Windows doesn't carry out SMART tests and they show problems you need to know about. Also run memtest86 - you get this in the grub optiont. If you boot from the DVD, hold left shift while booting to get the grub screen.
